California eariter this week. ..NevertheleM, hey. held the etupect, William T. Allen, 25, for questioning by police from El Segundo and Los Angeles. Officers from those cities were expected early today. The double shooting took place in El Segundo last Monday. The victims were Milton G. Curtis, 25, and Richard A. Phillips, 29 Authorities in Illinois and Missouri also placed a hold on Allen. Lt. Verne Dolan of the Chicago police department said Allen is suspected of having committed
some 50 recent robberies there. ■ He had been indicted for three of them before escaping Feb. 9 from Chester County Mental Hospital. St. Louis authorities said Allen ' matched the description of a gun- > man who wounded an officer in a > tavern holdup. Oakland Police Capt. Anthony I Bolger said Alien's story about the El Segundo shooting did not make much sense. Allen said he drove out to Los > Angeles with Betty Aguilar, a New Orleans woman he met on the way. — ■» — On.the way west, he claimed he shot a Nebraska deputy Sheriff and staged a holdup each day- No Nebraska officer is missing, Bolger said. Allen said he shot at two policemen in southern California “to frighten them away," but insisted he shot at them on Sunday. He said Miss Aguilar was not with him at the time.
