CHRIS K APPIER, 50, and wife Grace, 39, are shown in Chicago aboard the 45-foot schooner in which they will embark on a leisurely trip around and about the world, say two or three years. The South Haven, Mich., couple has been dreaming of this for a decade. They aren’t sailors, but they did do some practicing in Lake Michigan, and studied navigation a bit (International)

New Type Leaf Rust I Ruins Oats Fields Serious Damage In Much Os Indiana LAFAYETTE (UP) - Agricul- ; tural experts said today a new type leaf rust has ruined many Indiana oats fields and in one case left a crop so colored, that a black 'dog turned red chasing a rabbit II through it. The Purdue University agron- ■ omy department said the dog which changed color was reported ■ by a Miami County farm couple The department said the rust > “has produced very serious damage to yield and quality of most of the varieties of oats over much of Indiana this season.” It left • some fields "scarcely worth har- : vesting.” Robert E. Straszn»lm, agricultural statistician, said in his I weekly crop report that 90 -per cent of the state's wheat crop'was combined by last' weekend and the harvest is about a week ahead of last year. About 50/per cent of oats has been harvested. '

Corn is growing rapidly where Ifree of standing water from heavy rains and floods, he said, and early fields are showing tassels in all sections of the state. “On the whole," said Straszheim, “less than one-fifth of the total crop was in the tasseling stage at the week’s close as compared with about 30 per cent this time a year ago. In many counties early corn has started to silk. Despite abnormally heavy rains this year, . Straszheim reported that some localities “would benefit from additional rainfall as about 10 per cent of the counties report soil moisture short.” However, general rains fell earlier this week, after the report was prepared.
