National Race Is Five-Team Free-For-All By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press Sports Writer Is this where the New York Yankees kiss the rest of the American League goodbye? It could be Returning home from a finewestern (rip in first place by a sdJid 4% games. the world champions get the chance to wipe out what’s left of the 1957 AL pennant race in a 17 - game home stand opening tonight with a tilt against the second-place Chicago White Sox. There are no such "runaway” fears in the National League, however, as activity resumes. As the eastern teams go west in the NL, it’s still a five-team free-for-all for first place with every prospect that it will last all season. Two big Questions Two big questions feature the NL race now: .How long can the Milwaukee Braves hold their one-game league lead in the face of so many injuries? Are the defending champion Brooklyn Dodgers rolling now. as their 10 wins in 12 games since the All-Star break hints’ The Braves, opening at home tonight with 10-game winner Bob Buhl facing the Philadelphia Phillies, are so shackled by injuries that they wound up their eastern swing with catcher Del Crandall playing right field. Bill Brutal has been placed on the disabled list; Hank Aaron has an injured leg; Joe Adcock is out with a broken leg, and various other Brav.es are limping. The Dodgers have injury worries, too. Duke Snider’s trick knee probably will force him to wear a leg brace in tonight’s game in St. Louis. Rookie catcher John Roseboro did not accompany the team to St. Louis because of a thin fracture of the index finger of his right hand. He was struck on the hand by a foul tip Saturday. The third - place Cardinals, only 1% games behind, hope their faltering pitching reacts to this 20game home stand like a tonic Only Sam Jones has gone the route in the last 14 games. Fourth-place Cincinnati, two behind. still is trying to make the best run-making machine owned by a contending team run despite the poorest ERA, 4.34. But the Redlegs have shaken off their recent seven-game losing streak to win seven of the last nine and now they’re home again. The fifth-place Phillies. 3% behind, are fading with six losses in the last seven games and they’ve got to straighten themselves out on the road, a tough job. Monday’s Exhibition Results With most teams traveling, only exhibitions were played Monday. In the annual Hall-of-Fame Game at Cooperstown, N.Y., the Chicago White Sox belted 17 hits, including an eight-run third inning, to beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 14-3. In an all-Ohio tussle at Cleveland, the Indians avenged an earlier setback by beating Cincinnati, 5-1, as Rocky Colavito and George Strickland hit homers. Sautbine Builders Win League Game Sautbine Builders of Decatur whipped Pleasant Mills, 16-1, in an Adams-Wells county league game Sunday. The winners drove out 19 hits to score in every inning, while Gaunt limited Pleasant Mills to seven hits. St Mary's Gun Club Plans Shoot Sunday The St. Mary’s gun club will hold an dpen competition shoot Sunday afternoon at the shooting range south of Decatur. Bench rest and deer rifle classes will be held and public participation is invited, according to the committee in charge. Orange Bowl Ends • ' ''t' ' . ■ Atlantic Tieup MIAMI (UP) — Officials of thp Orange Bowl football game disclosed today that pressure from television networks for more a£ tractive games prompted them to drop their bowl tie-up with the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Bowl Committee announced Monday it has renewed its bpwl agreement with the Big Eight (the old Big Seven) from 1959 through 1961. But a similar pact with the ACC will be dropped after the game next Jan. 1. The committee also disclosed a clause in the new pact that might permit perennial power Oklahoma to appear in the bowl as often as three times in the next four years. The committee had been under strong local pressure to end the “closed shop” selection of teams and open the door for local favorites Miami, Florida, and Florida State. But then the pressure came,' too, from the television outlets. OBC President Joe H. Adams and former chairman Van Kusserow said the networks were looking for a bigger\ audience. "The television people wanted us to have a game with an intersectional angle,’’ Kusserow explained. “With a Big Eight champion as the host team, we have a wide choice from the Southeastern and Atlantic Coast conferences, Army, Navy and an out
