■■■ I . i.m , Farmers Warned 7 On Feeding Wheal Scab Is Cited As Dangerous Poison Farmers are headed for trouble if they feed wheat which contains more than three percent scab, to hogs or chickens, both Purdue and Illinois university agronomists warned today. Illinois plant pathologist Wayne M. Bever states that scab is a dangerous poison. It is a fungus disease, and more serious than usual in Adams county this year because weather conditions have encouraged its growth. Bever says that wheat or barley containing more than three pereent of scab can be very poisonous when fed to hogs or baby chicks, but oan be safely fed to cattle or to hens in small amounts. • K. E. Beesen, extension agronomist with Purdue university, adds that hogs will vomit if they eat it, and usually won’t even eat scab-infested wheat. Scab also cuts yields and reluces the value of the crop. Farmers who plan to save part of their crop for seed should therefore clean and treat it, Bever emphasizes. With scab so serious this year, Bever points out that some seed may not be worth cleaning. Denies Politics In State Police Moves Zeis Is Backed By Handley In Action INDIANAPOLIS (UP)-A controversy over the demotion of two Indiana State Police officers is threatening to challenge the claim that the force is full of .high morale and free of politics. The fight began early this month when Governor Handley’s new police superintendent, Harold Zeis, said Capt. Harry Sutherlin and Lt. Kermit Lewis would be demoted to sergeant Zeis sajd only they were “not producing.” He is expected to give evidence to support that claim when the State Police Board meets next Monday to decide the matter. State Police, operating on a merit system, is often regarded as one of the few, state agencies where career men can rise steadily in their jobs without being ‘‘busted" or fired by patronage upheavals. Morale also has been regarded high. Morale Still High Handley, who said he will back Zeis in his demotion plans, claims ‘‘morale of the State Police is still very high.” Men in the ranks volunteer this information without being asked, Handley said. Handley said he knew little of the specific charges against the two officers, but: “I know that there are no politics whatsoever concerned.” Handley said Sutherlin and Lewis “were asked to cooperate in some constructive ideas" and to “bring up the efficiency of their departments" and they failed to do so. Sutherlin is head of communications, and Lewis is in charge of accident records. Their case went to Hie police board when they refused to accept demotion anti transfer. On July 9, Capt. John Barton, a 22-year State Police veteran and head of the investigative division, resigned from the force. Zeis later confirmed he tried to reduce Barton to sergeant Zeis denied politics had anything to do with it. Friction to Blame? Observers speculated that friction between Zeis’ executive officer, Maj. Paul Beverforden, had much to do with the two demotion attempts and Barton's resignation. Beverforden rose from trooper to captain in the administration of former Gov. George Craig. When Handley named Zeis, former Allen County sheriff, to replace Frank Jessup as suerpintendent, Beverforden became the second in command.
