Farm Safety Week Is Proclaimed By Governor Handley Governor Harold W. Handley has proclaimed July 21-27 as farm safety week in Indiana. President 7isenhower previously set aside the same period for observance by the nation. The governor's proclamation urges “all citizens through their organizations to prepare programs and publicity calling attention to the fact that safety makes sense—the slogan for the 14th annual farm safety week being sponsored by the Indiana farm safety council and its cooperating agencies.” F. R. Willsey, Purdue University farm safety specialist, points out that accidents killed nearly one farm resident in Indiana each day last year. Os the 315 fatal accidents to farm residents each year, 85 result from mishaps arising from work on the farm. According to Willsey, about 25 Hoosier farm persons lose their lives in tractor accidents annually. Many of the victims are children. Automobile accidents, most of which occurred away from the farm, are a major cause of death of farmers and thejr families. Fire, drowning, falls, firearm discharges and animals are other heavy contributors to the rural death toll, Willsey reports. To get a line on how many actually would go to Communist China if given the chance the State Department planned a poll.
