Urges Warning On Cigarette Packs Bill Is Introduced To Require Labels WASHINGTON (UP>—The Public Health Service said today it is not ready “at this time” to recommend slapping a government can-cer-warning sticker on every pack of cigarettes. » I A Public Health Service spokesman said his agency was taking “the cautious view” until it learns whether “it is the tobacco itself that is the bad agent or the chemical agent in cigarette smoke produced when tobacco is lighted.” Sen. Walter F. Bennett (R-Utah) Tuesday introduced a bill that would require each pack of cigarettes bear a label warning: “Prolonged use of this product may result in cancer, in lung, heart and circulatory ailments and in other diseases.” Bennett said “perhaps we should be devoting more of our efforts to producing a ‘clean* cigarette than a ‘clean bomb’-” But Chairman Warren G. Magnuson (D-Wash.) of the Senate Commerce Committee questioned whether Bennett’s bill is necessary. The Commerce Committee already is considering a bill that would require listing the contents of cigarettes on each cigarette pack. Sen. John Sherman Cooper, a Republican from tobacco-growing Kentucky, said he would never stand in the way of cancer Research, but he suggested Congress keep its hands off the question. Bennett, a non-smoker, proposed his bill after Surgeon General Leroy E. Burney issueda statement declaring there is “increasing and consistent evidence” that excessive cigarette smoking is one of the causes of lung cancer. The Department of Agriculture, which handles the labeling of various types of tobaccos, already has tried to find out the Public Health Service’s position on recommending some form of “labeling.” A Public Health spokesman said “we don’t feel we have enough information about the whole situation at this time.” t trade in a good town — Decatur
