A SIGHT FOR ALL TO SEE will be enacted on the Harry Bowers farm, three and one-half miles south of Decatur on the Mud Pike road, Friday and Saturday afternoons, weather permitting. A 1921 steam traction engine and grain separator, pictured above, will be used for the threshing of wheat, just as it was done before the combine and modern harvesting methods. Interested persons are invited to bring their "children to see how such farm work was done in their grandfathers’ day.
Lowered Waistline Featured By Dior Hemlines Are Also Made Little Lower NEW YORK (UP) — Christian Dior, who 10 years ago dropped the hemline, now has hauled the waistline down. The French designer, in his New York collection for fall, defined die new silhouette either with lowplaced belts or by the cut of dresses and suit jackets. To go with it, he also' made skirts just a bit longer. But no cause for alarm, girls. This time, unlike the drastic lengthening of 1947, skirts are down no more than an inch Dior’s office explained the hemline is “in keeping with the lowered waistline.’’ For evening, the designer showed hemlines often short in front and long in back. It is anybddy’s guess whether the New York wholesale line is a harbinger of what he will show Aug. 1 in his Paris custom collection. '' Seven Groups Displayed The Dior collection was one of seven designer groups displayed Wednesday for fashion reporters attending shows by the couture group of the New York Dress Institute. ' Sometimes Dior’s lowered waistline is more in the “feeling” of cut rather than in anatomical location. This is the case with some of the suit jackets which hug the upper hipbone but are unbelted and completely “at ease" through the midriff. Several of these shorter jackets are buttoned, but designed so the bottom button isn’t used. In other costumes, Dior definitely spells out the low waistline with belts set two to three inches below the normal one. » One handsome dress in black silk and wool is completely straight of line, with attached belt of the same fabric starting about two inches from the natural waist, winding around the upper hip, and instead of joining, finishing off a couple of inches lower. Small bows of the fabric designate the 'beginning and end of the belt. The “Mobile Look” The Frenchman, never a man to let a collection go without a monicker, calls his new silhouette the “Mobile Look.” It features necklines often collarless ana usually standing away from the neck When collared, the clothes are either scarf-tied, or draped. Sleeves are loose fitting. Skirts generally are slim, but a few are pleated or draped. Dior goes along with other designers who provide walking room in the sMm cut clothes which predominate this fall. He cuts slits from 6 to 24 inches in skirts, but always builds an under-foundation of the same fabric for modesty’s sake. Nylon first went into limited production in 1939.

20 Years Ago Today July 11, 1937 was Sunday. 93-Year Old Man Painting Own Home Retired Painter Is Fixing Own House SEYMOUR, Ind. (UP)—Charles H. Davidson, despite his 93 years, is painting his house. All by himself. Inside and ,out. » * Davidson • took a look around the neat white-trimmed brick home this spring and decided it needed prettying up. Never one to turn over to somebody else a job he could do himself, Davidson got out his ladders and stirred a can of paint dnd started painting the exterior wood trim. Sometimes in order to reach the trim he had to climb 25 feet above ground , When he finishes, he intends to paint the interior. But Davidson won’t say for sure, because he might change l his mind if the outside work turns out to be too rigorous—or if his wife of 61 years talks him out of it. Painting for Davidson is almost like coming out of retirement. Davidson was a painter by occupation most of his life. Until he was 85, he put in a full week of work regularly. In 1949, he decided to take it a little easier and accepted only a limited number of painting jobs in summer months. Three years ago, at the age of 90, he quit painting altogether. But Davidson’s health was so good he kept busy at household tasks and figured if he could mow his own lawn and do other odd jobs around the house, he could paint. His wife, Rosa, says it’s hard to keep him from doing more work than he should at his age. A native of Martinsville and formerr esid en t of Indianapolis, Davidson has such good sight he doesn’t use glasses even tb read newspapers. 9 .-———l Modern Etiquette BY ROBERTA LEE Q. If a girl is to be married to a man who has been married previously, is it proper for her to have a big wedding, and wear a white gown and veil? A. Certainly. The fact that her bridegroom has been married before does not alter the fact that this is her first wedding. If she has been married previously, she should not have a big wedding nor wear white. Q. What is the correct size of the place card at a dinner? A. Usually about two inches long and an ineh and a half high. It is usually plain white, but it may be embossed in white or gold with a monogram or crest. Place cards are inscribed in longhand.
