Charges Conspiracy Against Pay-See TV - Charges Networks, j Movies Conspire WASHINGTON (UP > — E. F. McDonald Jr., president of Zenith Radio Corp., has charged that broadcasting networks have conspired with motion picture interests to block pay - as - you - see television. In a statement filed with the Federal Communications Commission, he said the two parties want to keep down toll TV to prevent competition. Zenith is seeking a permit for subscription television. The FCC is conducting proceedings on the question of whether to authorize toll TV. McDonald warned that further delay in authorizing subscription TV might lead to creation of a “wired” TV system in major cities. He told the commission hte would prefer thqt it “reject our petition altogether rather than bog us down in further endless administrative hearings and proceedings.” He#aid further delay would deprive the public "of any opportunity of deciding for itself whether subscription TV is a useful service —and the networks will be perhutted to carry on without opposition ” I Referring to the heads of the three TV networks, McDonald said u' - "HL wm- weNwr . W st either the Congress or the commission that any three men should be permitted to acquire a stranglehold over television.” He said subscription TV would make it possible for independent ' broadcasters to obtain revenue and programs without "current slavish dependence upon the networks.” McDonald said there have been rumors of deals with the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. to provide wire facilities in several large cities. He said it would lead to a “multi - billion - dollar, multichannel coaxial cable system linking homes in all principal cities.” He said construction of a wired TV system “might wreck broadcasting.” Eisenhower Picks Site For Vacation Summer Vacation At U.S. Naval Base WASHINGTON (UP) — The White House announced today that “if and when" the President takes a vacation this summer he wil go to the U.S. naval base on Coaster’s Harbor Island off New- . port. R.I. Ending the guessing about the President’s vacation site. White House Press Secretary James C Hagerty said that the mile-long island, with golf, fresh and salt water fishing and boating available, is the spot picked by President and Mrs. Eisenhower. Hagerty said it is "possible" that the President may go to the island in Narragansett Bay while the Senate is embroiled in its civil right/ debate, expected to last .most of the summer. House Republican Leader Joseph W Martin Jr. said after a GOP leaders’ meeting at the White House this morning that if the Senate gave House members permission to recess during the rights debate there would be “no reason why the President could not take a vacation too.” —» — The Makings CINCINNATI, 0. (UP) — David Gibson, 20, told police he was beatj en by two men who asked him for a cigaret. He gave them a can of tobacco and cigaret papers.
