Johnny Podres May Be Out For Weeks CINCINNATI (UP) — Manager Walt Alston of Brooklyn was serving the second day of a threeday suspension today but the Dodgers were far more concerned with the sidelining of their ace southpaw, Johnny Podres, who may be lost for several weeks. Alston was notified of his suspension and a $75 fine arising from remarks he made to umpires Frank Secory and Bill Baker during the first game of a double-header against St. Louis Sunday. Pee Wee Reese also was fined SSO for a run-in with Secory but he was not suspendedOvershadowing the fines, however, was the news that both Podres and Sandy Koufax might be lost to the Dodgers for an indefinite period. Both pitchers underwent "arm X-rays at Christ Hospital here Monday and the report on Podres was particularly discouraging. Dr. George Ballou diagnosed Podres’ ailment as an inflammation of the left elbow. The Dodger left hander few back to New York immediately to undergo further examination. X-rays taken of Koufax’ left arm proved negative but rest and whirlpool treatments were prescribed. Until Alston's suspension expires, coach Billy Herman will run the club. Martinez Is Winner Over Kid Gavilan JERSEY CITY, N.J. (UP) — Welterweight contender Vince Martinez, who beat ex - champion Kid Gavilan again Monday night, expects to fight Peter Waterman, British champion, at Newark, N.J-, in July. Sixth - ranking Martinez of Paterson, N.J., said today, “I want a shot at Carmen Basilio’s world title, but if I cah’t have it I’ll fight the British champ.” Manager Bill Daly said he would wait until Basilio had definitely signed to challenge Sugar Ray Robinson for the middeweight title or had agreed to defend the welter crown against Gaspar Ortega of Mexico, before accepting .the Waterman fight. Twenty-eight-year-old Martinez weighed pounds to Gavilati’s 147% Monday night in their outdoor 10-rounder before an estimated 7,200 fans at Roosevelt Stadium. Vince’s harder punching with counter blows gave him referee Paul Cavalier's decision on a rounds basis, seven to three. There are no ring judges used in New Jersey. The United Press agreed, 6-3-1, and a ringside poll of writers favored Martinez 22-4-1.

Dodger Rookie ' Beats Redlegs ; In First Start By MILTON RICHMAN United Press Sports Writer The jubilant Brooklyn Dodgers felt something like a sweepstakes winner today, having collected on a "long shot” by the simple expedient of writing Danny McDevitt’S name on a ticket. They made out that ticket last Friday and it provided transportation for McDevitt from St. Paul to Brooklyn M Who is this guy McDevitt? That’s a question even the Cincinnati Redlegs were asking today after the 25-year-old rookie southpaw, making his first big league appearance, struck out 11 of them Monday night and limited them to seven hits in pitching Brooklyn to within two games of the National League lead. Bucs Beat Braves In the only other game scheduled in the majors, Pittsburgh defeated league-leading Milwaukee 7-5. The Braves now lead the sec-ond-place Cardinals by one game. McDevitt, called up by the Dodgers to take up some of the slack caused by the sidelining of Johnny Podres and Sandy Koufax, put on quite a show for the 14,595 fans at Crosley Field. Relying chiefly on a fast ball and sneaky curve, the sawed-off New York City native struck out at least one batter in every inning except the seventh and eighth. McDevitt also drove in what proved to be the winning run with a nifty squeeze bunt during a three-run uprising against starter Johnny Kilppstein in the second inning. ’ Gino Cimoli led off the frame with his ninth homer over the left ield fence. Roy Campanella singled and Charey Neal drove him

in with a triple. McDevitt then laid down his squeeze bunt to bring in Neal, The Dodgers added three insurance runs on two hits in the ninth. By losing, the Redlegs tumbled into fifth place, two percentage points behind Brooklyn. Pittsburgh Rally Wins Pittsburgh gained its victory over Milwaukee with a four - run rally in the ninth, featured by triples off the bats of Gene Freese and Bob Skinner. , With the Braves leading, 4-3, Freese, who collected four of Pittsburgh’s 10 hits, tripled in the ninth and scored on Roman Mejias' pinch single- Mejias raced to third when Andy Pafko threw wildly to the plate and came home on Hank Foiles’ bunt.
