Westerns Blanket TV Sets By Fall Big Stampede Os Sagebrush Heroes HOLLYWOOD (UP) — Saddles and six-shooters will blanket television next fall when westerns take over the home screens. But towering Jim Arnesa, whose “Gunsmoke” started the trend, isn’t worried. Since the CBS-TV filmed series, plus Hugh O’Brian’s “Wyatt Earp,” became such successes, TV, like the movie industry, has clamped onto westerns as a surefire way to get audiences.

Because show business producers and sponsors are traditionally trend followers, Earp, Dfiton and other TV western start will be joined next fall by the biggest stampede of sagebrush heroes in TV history. , A record number of television series bit the dust this spring to make way for the downpour ot westerns and private eye series next fall. Thirty-four old series, nearly double last year’s casualties, were axed, including “Private Secretary,” “Bengal Lancers” “Noah’s Ark" and “Hiram Hoilir day." ABC-TV leads the networks with eight oaters scheduled for next fall, followed by NBC and CBS with four each. Some of the new western series being filmed for fall release include “Wagon

A balloon flill of water is let loose about 100 feet away, and slides toward the archer. If he hits the bag with an arrow, all is well. Train,” “Tales of Wells Fargo,” 'Tales of Texas Rangers," “Have Gun. Will Travel,” and “Broken Arrow.” But Jim Arness, now rambling through his new “Gunsmoke” series before the cameras at California Studio, yawns that the rush to hop on the bandwagon is “flattering” but not harming to his show. - _ . “It’s all to the good,” he said. “When something catches on, that’s it. Everybody goes that way. “But we’re not worried about this new competition. From what I know of the new western series, I don’t think competition will be tough. From the standpoint of quality, nothing can hurt our show.” “Gunsmoke” claims to be the original adult western, beginning with its inception on radio. As Arness points out, “Gunsmoke" is so adult “we even have a lady of shady virtue as the heroine of the series." Its fans include everybody from children to such adult western fans as Dr. Frank Baxter, the TV Shakespeare expert, who wrote Arness a fan tetter “just raving about the show.” Thirty-year-old, Minneapolis-born Arness has a quick reason why the reasonably authentic, grown-up “Gunsmoke” is such a success. “We don't fire 10 bullets out of a six-shooter,” he says.
