Tomato Setting Is Nearly Completed 2,500 Migratory . Workers In State INDIANAPOLIS (UP)—The first farm labor bulletin of the 1957 crop year showed today that tomato setting is finished or nearly finished in most Indi&ha areas, and nearly 2,500 "imported” workers have been helping. The Indiana Employment Security Division’s first weekly bulletin said tomato setting is completed in the Lafayette and Peru areas and nearly completed around Marion, Kokomo, Connersville and Anderson. At Anderson, 174 Texas-Mexi-cans were on hand as farm laborers and there was a temporary surplus of 50 workers, but at nearby New Castle there was a need for 50 additional workers. At Columbus, resetting of rainruined tomatoes occupied most of the time. Fort Wayne reportde tomato plants scarce and too large. Pea vining started in the Indianapolis area and the pea harVest Started at Lafayette. Radish and onion harvests were in progress around LaPorte, muck crops were in good condition around Logansport. Crops were in good condition around South Bend, too. , Missile Developed For Aerial Defense Successful Missile Announced By Army WASHINGTON, (UP> — The Army announced today that it has ; I successfully developed a missile | capable of defending against low- 1 flying attacking aircraft. The missiles, known as the I Hawk, will fill a gap in present ' defense systems. Existing missiles I guard against high-flying attackers but have failed against planes flying at low altitudes. The failure resulted from interference to ‘ standard radar operations. The Army disclosed it already ; has started action in the New York . and Washington-Baltimore areas to, get sites needed for the New Hawk . system. It said each battery will • require about 40 acres for emplace- ■ ment. To cut down on land-bolding re ! quirements and in the interest of < safety, the Army said, the missiles ! will be stored under ground. The Army said security prevents [ it from explaining what it called the Hawk's “low-altitude capability" as contrasted with the “highaltitude capability" of defense systems like Nike-Ajax and Nike-Her-cules. Experts speculated that the Hawk will be used against targets under 5,000 feet. It will, complement the Army’s Nike missile systems. Since the Nike-Hercules will employ atomic warheads, it could not in any case be used for lowaltitude defense. The Army said the jiew Hawk “will carry a lethal modern war. head and be capable of destroying attackers flying at even the lowest altitudes at ranges insuring effective protection of defended areas.” It did not disclose the range of the missile.t ■ 4— DAIRY INDUSTRY'S (Continued ftom Page One) ‘ in 1906, and in 1911 a method of filling glass bottles by machine was designed. In the past 30 years the number of dairies has decreased, as in Fort Wayne, where 42 dairies are now eight ' dairies. , A film, “Crisis,” showing the importance of the milk industry in civil defense, was then shown. Guests of the Lions club for the ' evening was Elden Holsapple and Ralph Smith. Sr. CHARGE GIRARD (Continued from Pnge Ono) • the information it claims about "enticement" and still turns Girard over to Japan “they’re really throwing him to the wolves.” He i said the Japanese do not allow ’ Cross-examination and witnesses to the charge "could be lying." I Carroll said Dechert's disclosure raises a "question of fact” and . makes it imperative McGarraghy . return the embattled GI to this country to testify and cross-exam-ine witnesses.
