W. S. Farris, Purdue University agricultural economist, says farmers will have three factors to consider in voting—acreage allotments for 1958, marketing quotas, and the announced 1958 support price of $1.78 per bushel. The national wheat allotment: for 1958 has been set at 55 mil- , lion acres—same is for the 1957 , crop and the minimum acreage fixed by law. Two-thirds of the growers voting ih the referepdt»***7nust ,fgys‘- ■ marketing quotas before they <?an go into effect. If marketing quotas are approved in the June 20 referendum, Farris says the following will apply: “Producers in commercial wheat states who stay within the acreage., alloted on their farms will be eligible for the full level of price support. "Producers in the commercial states who do not comply with allotments, will not be eligible for price support. “Producers who exceed their allotments will be subject to marketing quota penalties on their excess wheat.” - In case marketing quotas are not approved (if less than twothirds of the voters in the commercial states fail to approve* the following will apply: “The acreage allotment of 55 million acres will still be in effect. "Farmers who comply with the acreage allotments will be eligible for price support at a level lof 50 percent of parity < about sl,lßl. "Farmers who exceed their allotments will not be eligible for any price support. “Farmers, however, who exceed their allotments will not be subject to quota penalties.” What growers may plant 15 acres or less of wheat for harvest as grain in 1958 without regard to the acreage allotments or marketing quotas, Farris says. Farmers who will have more than 15 acres of wheat for harvest as grain in 1958 are eligible to vote in the referendum. To be eligible for suport. wheat must grade No. 3 or better or may be grade No. 4 or 5 on the grading factor of test weight only. Wheat must meet sanitation requirements of the Federal Food and Drug Administration. Average support price for the 1957 crop of wheat is $2 per bushel—Bo percent of the current wheat parity. Farris says the $1.78 figure will be the minimum average 1958 support price which will not be reduced but may be increased if the combination of the actual wheat parity price as of July 1, 1958. and the wheat supply relationships at that time indicate a
