Russia Gives Support For Syrian Plaint Soviet Ambassador Pledges Support To Charge On Israeli By WALTER LOGAN United Frew Staff Correspondent The Soviet Union threw its support today to a Syrian complaint in the U.N. Security Council that Israel had endangered Middle East peace by building a "military” bridge in a demilitarized zone between the countries. A dispatch from Damascus said Soviet Ambassador Sergei Nemtchina pledged Soviet support in a 45-minute talk with Syrian Foreign Minister Salah Bitar. Russia backed Egypt earlier this week in debate on the Suez Canal. The Syrians said Israel had constructed a Bailey brjdgd m &e structed a BaDey bridge m the Biblical Sea of Galilee—scene of several Israeli-Syrian clashes—in direct violation of the 1949 armistice agreements ending the Palestine war. Israel said it biilt a bridge for use by earth moving equipment; Syria says the bridge could be used for tanks and other heavy military equipment. A U.N. investigation found the bridge could be strengthened for military purposes but thought the bridge was built in connection with reclamation work. Premier David Ben - Gurion’s Mapai Labor Party held a series of conferences on the threatened revolt by the left wing Mapalm and Ahdut Zhoda parties over acceptance of the Eisenhower Doctrine. Engle, 68, of Decatur, was taken Wednesday to the Indiana state farm at Putnamville to serve time for non-payment of a 6100 and costs fine for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
