All Cars To Gain Chance To Qualify INDIANAPOLJS (UP) — Racing ; car owners were assured today of extra qualifying time for the Memorial Day 500-mile race if every car does not get a chance to make the field this weekend. J. C. Agajanian. vice president of the Championship Car Owners Assn., said the agreement was reached late Wednesday at a meeting with Anton Hulman Jr.. Terre Haute, Ind., speedway owner. The car owners sought the additional time because rain washed out aTFbut three hours of qualifying last weekend. Agajanian said Hulman agreed that if all the qualifying time is used up this Saturday and Sunday with some drivers not having a chance to qpaUfy, more time will be granted—probably Mondays * Trials to complete the 33-car lineup for the racing classic were scheduled to end next Sunday night, with 24 positions yet to be filled. In the first two days of qualifications last weekend, only nine drivers managed to qualify on Saturday because of intermittent showers, and Sunday was a complete washout. Although no clause in the “500" entry bttink calls for extra qualifying time in case of rain, it has been Speedway policy to extend time trials at least until a full field of cars is assured. The inclement weather also has been interfering with car testing and familiarization runs by drivers on the 2*4-mile oval track. The oval was open for only 70 minutes Wednesday, and a dozen drivers took advantage of the break in the weather for shakedown runs. The fastest lap was turned , in by Tony Bettenhausen, Tinley Park. lIL. at 143 m.p.h. in one of the sleek Novi cars. Herb Score Reports Condition Is Good CLEVELAND, Ohio (UP) — A cheerful, ruddy-faced, but blinkered Herb Score told the world today that ‘everything will be fine.”' " ' -- ’Score talked for 20 minutes with nine newsmen in his first news conference since he was struck in the right eye on May 7 by a line drive off the bat of New York Yankee ©il McDougald. His comments, flowing freely with little questioning by the guests in his darkened Lakeside Hospital room, indicated it might be later than June 9 before the strikeout king could return to the mound. His name will be removed from the disabled list on that date. “I doubt that I’ll have any activity until two or three weeks after I’m released from’the hospital," Score said. His physicians indicated he would probably be; released next
Tv - J SHORT DROP to more growing room ... bigger yields Allis-Chalmers 2 and 4-row Short-Boot Drill Planters drop seed straight down, only 14 inches to ground — with a minimum of bouncing and bunching—to assure uniform spacing of seed, more growing room ... even at high tractor speeds. Hoppers of the most modem design with precision-built plates meter the seed uniformly. Press wheels follow closely to gauge planting depth accurately. A ribbon of fertilizer is placed on each side of the seed. Fully mounted, and quickly attached with Snap-Coupler hitch to Allis-Chalmers tractors, these planters are adjustable to row spacings of 28 to 42 inches. If the doctors order the maximum period of recuperation, it could be mid-June or later before Score returns to active duty with the Indians. Score wore his own reading glasses, with the right lens blacked out except for a pin-hole aperture. Dr. Charles I. Thomas said that Score had completed the first of a series of vision tests Wednesday afternoon, and the vision is “satisfactory." “I could see improvement yesterday after they took those first tests," Score said. "I can see motionmow, but details are hazy and cloudy. During the last three or four days, it’s gotten much better —but it’s better than seeing blackness, I’ll tell' you."
