Police reports reveal that in cases of 3,000 swindles uncovered in a number of the nation's cities, the victims each were potential swindlers too; trying to get something for nothing. - Industrial employment was off in the Decatur area during April compared with a year ago, but there were favorable spots too in the monthly Chamber of Commerce report. Carloadings both in and out showed an increase and postal receipts were considerably higher. After all we do live in a pretty good community. -*—o—o—— The President, who spoke this week to the people and warned that there would be chaos if his huge budget was not adopted, hook, line and sinker, is the same man who predicted the death of the nation two years ago unless a Republican Congress were elected. He has yelled wolf on several occasions, only to find that the people are pretty substantial folks and can make up their own minds. -—-O-..-O—— The petition of James Kane of others for erection of a traffic signal light at the corner of Second and Jefferson streets certainly is worthy of consideration. The corner is a difficult one for motorists and pedestrians. What attitude the state highway department will take is not known, but surely people of Decatur know more about the difficulty of crossing that street than a stranger Would. We hope that the Kane petition is favorably received |nd hazard is eleminated. o o ■she 1957 edition of the BerneFrench high school year book is dedicated to a fine citizen, a gr|at school man and Christian En who has watched the ench school grow into Indiana's best, E. M. mperintendent of that stitution. It is a tribute to the efforts and long years of wofk of one man, who has become a watchword whenever godd schools are mentioned. His host of friends associated with hint in school work and his many friends in all walks of life wish for) him many more years of success.

Our good friend of years standing, Sam McDonald, who suffered a stroke recently, is again able to be around, with the assistance of a cane. Sam will be laid up for some time but indications are he will be back living a normal life again. His friends throughout the area and every fisherman who ever threw a line in the river which is Sam’s second home, all wish him a speedy recovery. There are those fishermen who swear that Sam knows half of the fish in the St. Marys river by their first name. o o How long has it been since you've taken a look at Decatur’s Peace Monument, located on the southwest corner of the Court House Square. It was the first Monument in America dedicated to Peace and listed on the bronze tablets are those who served in all Wars. Many have passed up their rewards, but the Monument stands and will forever, as a symbol of achievement by Adams • county men and women who served when needed, and whose ancestors are serving for a perpetual peace. Maybe since it’s so close to Memorial dhy, a visit to the Peace Monument would be a worthy tribute to our dead es all wans. o— —o Factories are bobbing up aU along the Mississippi waterway system, largely because of the low cost of diesel powered barge and tow boat transportation. High freight rates have caused industry to return to the waterways, and tow boat owners have answered with big modern barges which will double carrying capacity and speed. Factories are using the barges to bring in their building supplies when erecting a new industry and the same barges are used to haul the finished product to its destination. The importance of this waterway boom to Indiana is the fact that the Ohio river towns in southern Indiana are becoming alive and new industry is coming to the south part of the state all along the Ohio, with new jobs, new homes and a new economy. The waters at these large rivers also provide electrical power for industry. The movement is just catching fire and in a few short year* may change the industrial and economical life of millions.

C. Lee, Purdue University extension botanist. When morning glory, cockle bur, horse weeds, smart weed, ragweed and other weeds of the broadleaf type threaten the crop, it’s time to use the sprayer. Corn is sufficiently tolerant to dosages of 2,4-D required to kill these weeds, Lee explains. Spraying is not intended to replace cultivation; but should be used in combination with the cultivator. For example, 2,4-D will not kill grassy weeds, so cultivation must be relied upon to do that job. However, spraying may reduce the number of cultivations necessary to keep the corn field clean. Growth of weeds determines the best time to spray, according to Lee. If weeds emerge early, while the corn is still small, 2,4-D may be applied then. When weeds make later growth, spraying just before “lay-by” time may be the most satisfactory. A sprayer equipped with a straight boom is most practical for spraying corn which is less than 18 inches tall. When larger corn is sprayed, the boom should be equipped with drops in order to apply the 2,4-D at the base of the stalk and directly on the weeds. Excessive dosages of 2,4-D are injurious to corn, so care must be taken to use the proper amount of the weed-killer, Lee emphasizes. Two-thirds of a pint of a 40 percent 2,4-D in 10 gallons of water per acre is the proper dosage. Either the ester or amine types of 2,4-D may be used. The amines and the low volatile esters are preferred to the high volatile ester type. The high volatile materials may cause fumes that may drift some distance and cause injury to susceptible plants such as soybeans, tomatoes and garden crops. a—■ — 20 Years Ago Today oo May 23. 1937 was Sunday.
