The committee ordered a 500,-000-hour reduction in Air Force flying time — budgeted for 9,400,000 hours. It called for less waste in procurement, a curb on the "guaranteed profit" enjoyed by some contractors, especially those making planes. It told the military to speed up a study looking to elimination of some of the 1,000 or more major bases in arid outside this country, and said those not needed should be closed despite inevitable “political repercussions." It ordered a slow-down in purchase of passenger cars (the services now have 45.000) and called for reduced travel, assignment of fewer servicemen to work in officers clubs and commissaries, a reduced flow of dependents to bases overseas, and a general "tightening of financial belts” by the armed forces everywhere. DOGGETT (Coufluued from Pax> Que) rels and he considered the price "entirely too high." He said there was waste. "We had too many boys that thought, well, if the state buys it ws’ll just dump in a quart,” Fancher said. The State Highway Department bought a big .supply of “Gio” during the chairmanship of Virgil (Red) Smith. Local representatives of the "Gio” firm were William E. Sayer, former administrative assistant to ex-Gov. George N. Craig, and Arthur J. Mogilner, • who later teamed up with Smith in a "public relations’ firm. Officials have said that "Gio" cost the state about twice as much as the prices quoted for competitive additives. Among today's witnesses were F.F. Heyte, a highway department laboratory technician vAo made comparative tests of "Gio" and another additive, and Cecil P. McDonough, former highway purchasing agent. Others An Summoned Others were Lloyd E. Poindexter, former superintendent of highway maintenance; Fred Woodcock, a highway employe; Fred Ulrey, superintendent of highway garages; Donald Fancher, former conservation department purchasing director, and Bobby Pile, a former right-of-way employe for the highway department Earlier this month, the jury returned indictments against Smith, former right-of-way chief Nile Teverbaugh, his former chief assistant Harry Doggett, and Milan attorney Robert Peak in connection with alleged’ crimes in the purchase of land along the Madison Ave. Expressway route in Indianapolis. Since then, all four cited the Fifth Amendment in refusing to answer questions for a U.S. Senate subcommittee investigating the scandal at hearings in Washington. TWISTER (Continued from Page O»e) Children darted frantically through the rubble to search for relatives while.the dust was still hanging over the area. Rescue workers were hampered by sightseers who rushed to the scene. Formed At Ottawa The r tornado formed at Ottawa, where Mr. and Mrs. James Marsh were killed when the twister crushed their farm home. It also destroyed a drive - in theater, a motel and a case at Ottawa. The storm then smashed across Johnson County killing Mrs. Barbara Davis, 51, her two daughters and her father, near Spring Hill. It dipped once more at Marti* ; Crty, just "over the state line in Missouri, killing Lowell Atkinson, ; and then headed for Kansas City and Ruskin Heights. Trade in a good town — vecatur
