Charge Denied By Atom Commission Brush Aside Charge Made By Magazine WASHINGTON — (W — The Atomic Energy Commission today brushed aside a charge by Reporter Magazine that thouYsands of Americans “may-yet turn out to be victims” of nuclear tests in Nevada. The commission said its tests are conducted under rigidly — controlled conditions and all available evidence has “confirmed that fallout from Nevada has not caused illness or detectable injury to realth.” The magazine made the statement in a copyrighted article, “Clouds From Nevada,” which comprised most of its current issue. tl said residents and visitors to Nevada and Utah have been exposed to radioactive fallout despite AEC precautions. An accompanying editorial said the commission “has frequently used the strictures of the seurity regulations to cover up its failures to, give adequate protection or warning to a sizeable number of people in the weapons testing In response to a query from the region.”. United Press, the AEC said “precautions are taken to keep the amount of local fallout to as low levels as possible, and to measure and record the radiation exposures which might be received by persons in the area around the test site. “The many measurements which have been taken have confirmed that fallout from Nevada has not caused illness or dectable injury to health.” "“KENNEDY ““ crom rage O»«) petitors were going to do. That’s a very strange request.” “I do not think sq,” said Wilson. “I’m interested in your ethical approach—and your company’s,” j the senator said. 4 Wilson said that in an earlier i Case in Milwaukee, one brewer j “broke out” of the united front j and gave a wage increase, forcing the others to do the same. He said he wanted to know if this 1 would happen in California. ■ “Beck’s interest was very close 1 to yours and not necessarily in ’ tiie interest of his members,” 1 Sen. Kennedy said. “You are trying to find out if any brewer was ffoing to break the line. It seems to me...that Beck associated himself with you in limiting a wage Increase.’’ * Wilson said the contract was ’Hfentually sighed “at a higher figure than some of us thought should be paid.” Three Still Missing Previously the committee had heard testimony that Beck forced out the head of the beer distributing company in favor of- Dave Beck Jr. The committee wants to question Beck Jr., but Counsel Kennedy said he and two others sought by the senators had slipped into Canada and probably would not return. 1 Other brewing company officials had identified correspondence and inter-office memoranda showing the firm’s "unhappiness” over . Beck’s domination of the whole- r sale beverage company which disSibuted Budweiser in an area t anketing Alaska and much of the t Northwest. f In testimony Wednesday Beck c Sr. refused to answer questions. He even refused to tell the com- \ mittee if he knew his 36-year-old t son. r t SUMMERFIELD (C—tiaaeW rr.,in ( curtail postal services accord- S mgly. t CONVICTS ‘ (Contlr -4 from j. To Supreme Court Clarification Os Legal Status Seen WASHINGTON — (Bl - A new legal twist given wiretapping by a federal appeals court in New York may bring a sweeping clarification of its cloudy legal status by the U.S. Supreme Court. As long ago as 1952 three Supreme Coun justices said they were ready for this task. Since then deaths and retirements of other justices have brought four new members to the high bench. The Federal Communications Act prohibits - wiretapping, although its application to law enforcement officers has been open to question. Under Supreme Court decisions, wiretap A evidence has been inadmissible in federal courts since 1937, although it can be used in state courts. But the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Wednesday upheld the conviction on bootlegging charges of, Salvatore Benantiz despite the fact that wiretapped conversations were used against him New York City police made the tap under a state law permitting its authorization by a judge. Benanti's attorney, George J. Todaro, said he will certainly appeal to the Supreme Court. ike" (Coatlnned trum Paa* Oa«> I IN pared to make sacrifices. Asked if the President indicated that he would fight anew against any cuts below the $3,880,000,000 figure. McCormack said that “we did not talk in those terms.” House Republican Leader Joseph W. Martin Jr. (Mass.) said he, too, thought the chief executive made a “very strong, case” for the program. More Trouble Spot s Chairman Richard B. Russell (D-Ga.) of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he thought foreign aid could Be cut even more and that $2,400,000,000 would be “wholly adequate.” Knowland said he thought Eisenhower made an effective point in showing that a “combined overall free world defense" exists today because of American aid in the past. ft .-■ Knowland said he expects the revised program will be “substantially approved.” But he said this does not mean that Congress won’t come up'with a “different figure” than the President’s $3,880,000,000. A bulletin issued shortly before noon said his condition was “very satisfactory.” Court sources said the youthful heir to the throne would have to stay in bed for about one week. The operation caused the second interruption in Charles’ first term as a schoolboy. Earlier in die year ( he had to be kept home because of a lingering cold. The operation was carried out by one of Britain’s most famous chil- , dren’a doctors, James Crooks of the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, London. Crooks is a specialist in eye, ear, nose and 1 throat surgery. ’ ■ A room on the second floor of ■ the palace was converted into a ». temporary operating theater, t Crooks, another surgeon, an aness thetist and four nurses arrived > there just before 9 a.m. I The prince's health also came into public notice this year when t the Queen decided to have him . arid his younger sister, Princess . Anne, inoculated with the British Salk-type polio vaccine. Queen Elizabeth, her husband ’ and Princess Anne were in the 1 palace during the operating. Im- ! mediately afterward the Duke of Edinburgh left to attend a previ-ously-ceheduled meeting of the trustees of Greenwich Museum. Th.e.t’igo small White House whirlybirds dropped bently down into the grassy ellipse behind the White House along with six larger military helicopters which will be used during the July civil defense test. Eventually, the Bell HI3J models will make landings directly on the White Rouse grounds to pick up the President and whisk him to the National Airport for his trips out of town.
