Dr. Frederick Shroyer's Novel Published In Fall
A novel written by a Los Angeles State College associate professor, recently accepted for publiA ation, may be slated for this year’s “best-seller" list. The literary effort, “Wall to the Nightside,’’ has been authored by Dr. Frederick B. Shroyer, an English and American literature professor at Los Angeles State College — who as a result of his novel, was caught in a writer’s dream of having two publishing firms seeking the honor of publishing his work. As a result, the Apppelton — Century firm has received the manuscript and is rushipg the printing of “Wall to the Nightside” to feature it as one of their major publications qf the fall book list. « e Dr. Shroyer’s novel is set in a mid-western community of 6000 persons in the 1930’5. It is arr analysis of the descent of the old element of midwestern society in the depression years and the emergence of the new midwest just' prior to World War 11. Dr. Shroyer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Shroyer of Decatur. “Wall to the Nightside” is a story about a middle-aged man who marries a young girl from the south. They marry in part for security, each believing the other to pdssess strengths the other lacks in his own character. “Dr. Shroyer’s book has every Chance of becoming a best seller,” stated Dr. Wirt Williams, an associate professor of English and journalism at Los Angeles State College, who is also the author of a published novel. "The book evokes a time and a place in a stream of brilliant images. The impress of Victorian masters, whom Professor Shroyer knows so well, is clearly upon this highly impressive first novel," he added. In addition to his novel. Dr. Shroyer is author of a previously published book, “A College Treasury,” and has lectured on literature before many organizations. The Moriroeville man was told that an investigation is being made to determine the city’s ability to provide the requested power and that it will be completed by Friday. Letters from the state board of health and the state stream pollution control board informing city officials of the approval of minor revisions in plans for the city’s sewage disposal project were recorded. Also read and recorded at Tuesday night’s meeting was the report by Dick D. Heller. Jr., on the meeting of the board which met to establish the wage scale for construction of the sewage disposal plant. Mayor Robert Cole announced a reminder that Aug. 8 will be the final date for the first publication of legal Jiotices 4>f budget appropriations for 1958. He asked the council to begin considering next year’s budgets for the various departments. The meeting was concluded with a discussion of the revolving sewer fund. Councilman Ed Bauer brought the subject to the council’s attention with a suggestion that further effort be made to collect money still owed to the revolving fund. It was pointed out that further construction of much-needed sewers in the city is being held up by lack of funds. The fund would be increased considerably by sewage assessments not yet paid.
