I CreamwiComments on the Sunday school lesson, Abraham and his God, Gen. 12:1-3; 17:1-9 for Sunday, May 12th. The covenant proposed by God to Abraham was the prophetic picture of God’s purpose, not only for Abraham and his descendants, but all nations. The actual realixation of that covenant depends on mail's fath and obedience. V. 1. "Now the Lord had said unto, Get thee out of they country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee,” Abraham had lived with his family in Mesopotamia (now Iraqi but his father had enough of the pleasuremadness of Ur. and had dreamed of Canaan. He got only as far as Harsan, an asis in the desert, and gave up his dream of Canaan. God called Abraham to one of the most important migrations in history. He was to go to an unknown country, cutting all ties with his family, and his ancestral home. Tis called for great faith on Abraham's part. Vs. 2, 3. “And I wiU make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee and curse them that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be Messed.” Abraham under God’s guidance was to become one of the greatest men in history, founder of the three great monotheistic religions of the world-Judaism, Islam and Chrisianity. God sought out Abraham and made a covenant with him who was to be the father of a great nation. The real glory of Irael was that it was divinely commissioned to become a light to the Gentiles and to all the faithful. not merly selfishly nationistic. Vs. 1, 2. “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unteggpm, I am the Al-might God; walfciwfoMtjne, and be thou, perfect . . . And I will make my coventant between mt and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.” Abram needed reasurance, so God appeared to hm again repeating his promise that he would e the founder of a great nation by miracuously promising an heir to Abraham and Sara in spite of their advanced years. In return Abram was to be completely devoted to God in thought, word and deed. God states his Mans for the leader of his chosen people. Vs. 3,4, "And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying. ... As for me behold my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.” According to eastern custom, Abram prostrated himself as an act to reverence and humilityAbram is to be the ancestor of many including Ishmaelites and Edomites as well as the children of Israel. V. S. . . “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be called Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.” Abram means “exalted lather” and Abraham, “father of a. multitude”. New privileges and new responsibilities qualify him for a new name. Vs. 6,7. And I will make thee exceedingly fruitful, and Rwill make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. . . And I will establish my covenant me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an -wer lasting convenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.” Three degrees of posterity are specified-many descendants, nations, and kings of nations.
