vacant until the 1958 general election. Thomson, however, gave no indication of his plans. By Wisconsin law the governor is not permitted to fill Senate vacancies by appointment. The law provides that a special election shall be held not less than 55 nor more than 70 days after called by the governor. A primary would be held four weeks before the election and nomination papers would be filed 18 days before the primary. Three Republicans and three Democrats were regarded as likely candidates for McCarthy's seat. Regarded as the leading candidate was three-time Gov. Walter Kohler, a proven vote-getter and an “Eisenhower Republican." Other GOP possibilities were former U.S. Rep. Glenn Davis, who tried to unseat Sen. Alexander Wiley in last year's primary, and Lt. Gov. Warren Knowles. The likely Democratic candidates were William Proxmire, a three-time loser in the race for governor. State Sen. Gaylord Nelson, a Madison party leader, and U.S. Rep. Henry Reuss of Milwaukee. Observers said the Republican candidate probably would be favored to win since the GOP has l<mg controlled most state office and congressional seats. However, the Democrats have gained strength in recent years.
SEN. MCCARTHY (ContlnuAO from rw un»» day illness" .. Election For Successor His death could not affect control of the Senate, which now lies with the Democrats by one vote. Gov. Vernon Thomson of Wisconsin was thought likely to call a special election to fill the vacancy. His body was taken during the night to the funeral parlors of Joseph Gawler’s Sons Inc.—hard by the White House where he seldom was welcome—to await completion of funeral arrangements. He left a grieving, beautiful young wife of 31 years and an adopted daughter of five months. He left enemies who at this time chose to follow the example of one of his hardest-hit targets, former Secretary of State Dean Acheson. Acheson said it in Latin: “De mortuis nil nisi bonum"— “Os the dead (say) nothing but good." President Extends Sympathy President Eisenhower, who had trouble with McCarthy almost from the beginning ot the GOP president's first term, joined Mrs. Eisenhower Thursday night in sending “profound sympathies to Mrs. M cCarthy on the grievous personal loss she has sustained." Os McCarthy’s death, Eisenhower said only that he had “just been informed of (his) sudden passing.” “I’m at odds with a lot of people but that doesn’t mean I hate them," Truman told reporters. “Let's not dig up a lot of old dead horses.” BENSON <C—U»—< XO«» fy O—> son’s desire." —A demand from Chairman Harold D. The Justice Department said the return showed a net income of $46,398 and tax due of $15,540 for 1950. But the department said Beck's net income for that year actually was $135,226 on which the correct tax would have been $71,960—556,420 more than was paid. »• The second count of the indictment charges Beck with aiding in the preparation of a fraudulent information return from the Joint Council Building Assn., a Tearasters Union real estate company. Indictment Expected Beck cited possible income tax charges in refusing to answer questions before the Senate committee last month. His attorney said at that time that an indictmen was expected. The two-count indictment marked the “culmination of intensive investigations” begun early in 1954 by the Internal Revenue Service and followed by a review of the evidence by justice investigm tors, the Justice Department said. Each of the two charges carries a possible maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment or a fine of SIO,OOO or both upon conviction. Trade in a good town — Decatar
