DeVoss had just received a copy of correspondence from the federal trade commission on a “National Research Corporation’' which had been ordered to stop mailing cards for information to be used in collecting debts without so informing the receiver of the card. ‘ The man then took the copy of Ute desist order from the FTC to the post office, along with the letter. Postmaster Leo Kirsch read both documents, and asked the man to surrender the document so that it could be used as evidence against the company. Kirsch stated that the document will be sent to the inspector in charge for processing as a mailing in violation of postal laws. The postmaster cautioned local residents against answering unidentified requests for information, and asked that any mailings
thought to be in violation of postal laws be brought to the post office. Girl Scout Rem We met at (he school. Mrs. Heller took us to the library. We said the pledge and the Brownie promise. (Troop 28' Express Hope Long Drought Is Broken No Simple Answer To Future Prospect WASHINGTON of three government agencies expressed cautious hope today that the parching, costly eight-yea r drought in the nation’s western and southwestern Plains has been broken. tions about effects of the recent severe storms and floods in the drought states. Experts of the Weather Bureau, the U.S. Geological Survey and Agriculture Department agreed the worst of the drought is overtor the moment at least. But they also agreed there is no clearcut or simple answer to the question of future prospects for drought areas. ' “In some areas, yes, the drought is over,” a Weather Bureau official said, “in other areas, no. For some crops it is over. For others it is not over.” “I just don't know,” a Geological Survey official said. “I would hesitate to say the drought is over even with a lot of rain. The water may run off rapidly, the rain may stop, and in a few weeks we could be back where we were before. Would the drought we’ve had for eight years be over and a new one started?” “It seems to be over in a substantial part of the area,” reported an Agriculture Department expert. "But we will need a great deal more moisture in the subsoil for the drought really to be ovdr.”
These agencies have dealt with drought problems since great arid areas began forming in the southern Great Plains in early 1950. The drought first appeared in southwest Texas and southpastern New Mexico. It spread north and east through what in normal times was known as a "sea of grass.” At the height of the drought the areh was literally “the great American desert." Crops did not grow. Pastures»withered. Livestock had to be taken off many ranges. During the-past winter severe storms bringing oceans of rain and snow swept the arid Southwest. The rainstorms are continuing over a large section. Rivers which for years were dry now are over their banks. Reservoirs are filled jor filling. What was dual tor years now is mud.
