Savings Bonds Now Bear More Interest 4 Expect Increases In Sale Os Bonds T. F. Graliker, chairman of the Adams county U. S. Savings bonds committee, has been officially notified of the changes made in series E and H savings bonds to improve their yield and redemption provisions in a bill passed by Congress and signed by the President during the last week-end. The law improving the investment valqe of savings bonds not only became effective immediately but the treasury department has announced that its provisions will apply to all savings bonds purchased since February I, 1957. The new savings bonds will bear interest at the rate of 3¥< per cent when held to maturity and will begin paying 3 per cent after they have been held for 3 years. The new bonds also reach maturity earlier than their predecessors eight years and eleven months, which shortens their maturity per- ■ iod by nine months. ‘ A recent statement from the treasury department dealt with the. question of Cashing in the old savings bonds to acquire the new ones. The treasury said the holders of the old bonds still have a prime investment and they will receive very little benefit by shifting to the new bonds. In fact bond owners who have held their securities for a number of years would lose assets by trading the old for the new bonds. Financial experts now believe that savings bands, now owned by 46,000,000 Americans who hold bonds valued at $41,000,000,000 have reached a competitive position with most forms of savings. Bankers are predicting a quick pick-up in savings bonds sales, which have been lagging behind redemptions for several months. A score or more of Indiana’s largest industries have been postponing payroll savings campaigns to sell bonds to their employes pending passage of the legislation authorizing the improved bonds. It is anticipated that these campaigns will be placed in operation as soon as possible. United Press correspondent Eliav Simon reported from Jerusalem that a Western diplomatic source said dissension among Jordan’s Arab neighbors apparently has dispelled all fears they would move in and carve up the tiny kingdom for themselves. President Shukri el Kuwatli of Syria, and Wing Commander Ali Sabry, top political adviser to Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, were discussing the Jordanian situation. The atmosphere has changed so radically in Jordan in the last fteek that Dr. Mustafa Khalifa, a prominent right wing party leader, declared publicly in Amman Friday that he fully supports the Eisenhower Doctrine. Egypt Welcomes U.S. Plan There were these other developments on the Middle East: —Egyptian circles welcomed the U.S. proposal in the United Nations to give the Egyptian Suez Canal plan a try but they condemned what they called a "show of strength” by the U.S. 6th Fleet over the Jordan crisis. —Western diplomats at the United Nations said Friday's tacit agreement by the Security Council to try out the Egyptian plan for operating the canal was a clear-cut victory for Nasser. —The U.S. 6th Fleet was expected to be at its destination somewhere in the eastern Mediterranean by Sunday.
