Average American Pays Third Os Pay In Taxes
By ROBERT SHORTAL United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK (UP)—The average American is paying out one-third of his income in taxes. He probably has not calculated or realized this because so many of the taxes are hidden. They are included in the cost of things he buys. Hie Tax Foundation has figured that this will be the true load in federal, state and local taxes —. direct and hidden —for these average-bracket wage-earners in 1957 compared with last year: Income Taxes Per Cent Increase $3,500 $1,059 30 S2B $4,500 $1,393 31 $35 SB,OOO $2,726 34 46 Th# foundation said that while most Americans squawk about taxes, "they would probably yell even louder if they realized that the only source of taxes is people and the individual taxpayer is really paying much more for government than he thinks he is." The foundation pointed out that “every red cent that government spends must come from the taxpayer.” The fact of the matter is that corporations do not pay taxes—they collect them. The big federal tax bite, amounting to 52 per cent of corporate earnings, is passed along in the form of higher prices, because no company could afford to absorb those tgxes and stay in business. The result, according to the foundation, is that you—and you alone—pat taxes. There are 100 taxes in the price of an egg. 116 in a man’s suit, 151 in a lo&fof bread, 600 in the cost of a housto In addition to- federal income and social security taxes, some 31 states have income tax laws and some 33 have retail sales taxes of from one to 3(4 cents on each dollar of goods and services purchased. Most of these sales tax laws require that the tax be passed on to consumers. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says the average taxpayer didn’t start earning any money for himself until Feb. 1. He worked through January for Uncle Sam. The chamber said the average taxpayer — the $5,000-a-year man with a wife and two children — spends 22 working days earning

COWS GOING To GRASS SHOULD GET BULKY-LAS Pastures with plenty of green grass are a welcome sight to dairymen. Don’t let them deceive you. Lush and inviting as they are to cows, new pasture is mostly water. Cows can't eat enough l to supply necessary nutrients to body and for milk production. Purina Bulky-Las is an appetizing ration which will help off-set the laxative effect of green grass and give needed nutrition. Feed' one-half gallon per head per feeding. Also, molasses in Bulky-Las makes cows drink more water which helps them make more milk. Ask about it. FARROWING AND CALVING MANAGEMENT HINTS THAT PAY When calves are dropped and pigs farrowed, it’s very important that the farmer be present to do the little jobs that often mean the difference between life or death. Here are a few general tips. Wash and disinfect hands and all instruments to be used in Purina Disinfectant Dip again before each use. Thoroughly scrub and disinfect sows and cows to prevent transmitting disease germs to young, Keep new-born calves and pigs warm and dry, and for complete information see our Purina Program booklets. They’re free.

enough money to pay off his income taxes alone. Fires Costliest In History Last Year United States And Canada Losses High BOSTON HP) — Big fires in the United States and Canada in 1956 caused an estimated $330,156,000 loss—the worst in history. The two countries reported 430 large fires last year with individual loss of at least $250,000. And 86 of them caused one million dollars or more damage. The report was released today by the National Fire Protection Assn, in its annual study of fires in North America. The NEPA said the previous high fire loss was in 1953 when damage in the United States and Canada was set at $274,374,500. Industrial fire losses topped the unprecedented fire destruction. More than 100 large toss industrial fires were reported and 14 large loss church fires equalled the total number over the preceding three years. More than 400 persons perished during large loss blazes, 333 the result of aircraft fires. The previous year’s total from big fires was 296. The largest structural fire in 1956 occurred in Brooklyn when the Luckenbach Steamship Co. pier exploded. Ten persons were killed and damage was estimated at $7,600,000. The trucking industry ranks ‘ second to agriculture as the na- ■ tion’s largest employer of labor. : More than seven million persons ' are directly employed by the industry. ■— ■ : Adoption l NEWTON, Mass. —(W — Dr. and Mrs. William J. Be sure the'room contains plenty of draftfree fresh air. If you dfen’t, slower growth, wet litter; poor appetites and other troubles may result. For best chick growth Purina suggests that you have the brooder stove set at 90° when chicks arrive. Place bulb of‘thermometer 6 inches from edge of hover and 2 inches from floor. Reduce temperature 5° each week. Although the house was scrubbed and disinfected with Purina Disinfectant solution, it’s smart to use Check-R-Tabs in drinking water for the first 4 weeks at least, (hie tablet purifies a quart of water for 24 hours. Put in roosts early . . . by the end of the third week. Early roosting reduces damp litter and promotes more even growth. Early Gains Are Cheapest Putina’s new “Fast-Start” Twins. . . Baby Pig Chow and Pig Startena . . . were developed by Purina Research to get pigs eating and gaining early. Our'pig-weigh-ing records shows gains can be made when pigs are with sow on this program. Let’s talk it over and figure why you should consider the Purina Hog Profit Plan for 1957.
