Dr. James G. Shanklin, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University at Oregon, issued the warning to Indiana family doctors during the ninth annual scientific assembly of the Indiana Academy of General Practice. ‘Transquilizers relieve only the symptoms of anxiety and anxiety fatigue, without affecting underlying causes,” Shanklin said. He termed anxiety an interference of normal behavior. Shanklin said tranquilizers’ chief value is as “access” drugs which calm the patient enough to permit reeducation, conditioned relaxation and psychologic reorientation. Drugs still in the development stage, or combinations of two or more tranquilizers, may prove more effective than those now in wide use, Shanklin said. The two-day assembly ended , Thursday with the group adopting a nine-point program for improvement of mental health in Indiana. The program calls for continued care by family doctors even if i patitentS" arc admitted to. menw ■ hospitals and home treatment of ■ mental patients after their release • from hospitals, among other things. Corn Borer Cosily To U. S. Farmers 1956 Losses Three Per Cent Os Crop WASHINGTON (UP)-The agriculture department estimated today that the European corn borer destroyed about 98 million bushels of corn in 1956, costing farmers l some $119,500,000. The 1956 losses were about 3 per cent of the total crop, but well under the 155 million bushels destroyed by the voracious little pest in 1955. Last year's losses in bushels were the third highest since the all-time high of 314 million bushels in 1949. lowa farmers suffered the greatest 1055—544,328,000. The damage in Illinois was $35,076,000. Indiana, where the third largest loss occurred, reported damage of $6,868,000. Minnesota was close behind with $6,688,000 and Missouri damage was $6,191,000. The department said surveys made last fall indicated fewer European corn borers in corn fields in 1957 than last year, but still in large enough numbers to pose a serious threat. The north central states showed reduced numbers of this damaging corn insect, while increased numbers showed up in eastern states. LEAffTa rwivl wer/ expected in the Great Basin and the northern’ and central Rockies.
