act to assist a victim of Middle Eastern aggression. The declare tion would apply in event of an “Israel-Arab dispute,” the President said. Could Use “Doctrine” In event of a Communist strike against Jordan or some other Middle Eastern country, American action also could be taken under the recently-approved “Eisenhower Doctrine," the President pointed out. This authorizes the President to use American armed forces if help is requested by Mideast nations against a Communist attack. The British and French embassies were pleased to hear the President say the 1950 pledge is still in effect. Similar assurances have been made privately to Britain and France by the State, Department, it was learned. France and Britain recently made inquiries on this point, diplomats said. Plan Still Operative A British Embassy spokesman told a reporter the 1950 declaration is “still operative, we haven’t backed o(it of it at all.” This was echoed by a French Embassy spokesman who said the declaration is “still good.” Under terms of the 1950 threepower declaration the United States, Britain and France pledged their opposition to a Mid-
dle Eastern arms race. The declaration added: "The three governments, should they find that any of these states was preparing to violate frontiers or armistice lines, would .. . immediately take action, both within and outside*lhe United Nations, to prevent such violation." In practical terms the Big Three presumably would take “action” firs| through the United Nations. This was the procedure followed by the United States in the British - French - Israeli attack on Egypt. An eight-acre plot of white, Scotch. Shadow Cast Over Easter Pilgrimage Tension Casts Pall Over Jerusalem By UNITED PRESS Christians throughout the world celebrate Easter this week in church and in a variety of traditional ceremonies in homes and outdoors. But in Jerusalem, where, by Christian teaching, Christ was crucified, buried and rose again from the dead 1.924 years ago, the tensions among Jews and Arabs have cast a shadow over the Christian pllgraimages of Holy Week. The number of Eastern visitors is the smallest in a long time. Only about 1,500 persons have' come from overseas, compared with about 15,000 last year. But the familiar ceremonies will be observed. .

This afternoon a procession makes Its way to the room in which Jesus Is said to have served the last supper to his disciples. On Good Friday thousands will carry crosses in procession down Via Dolorossa, the route Jesus carried His cross to Golgotha. On Sunday, sunrise services will be held in both the new and old cities of Jerusalem, with a united service taking place in the garden of the tomb outside the walls of the old city in Jordan. The Jerusalem newspaper El Jihad reported Wednesday that Jordan has barred the French and Dutch consular corps from crossing into Jordan to -take part in the ceremony. A United Nations spokesman in Cairo said 100 UNEF soldiers would be flown from their posts to Egypt to spend Easter in Jerusalem. In Rome, capital of the world's 430 million Roman Catholics, thousands of tourists and pilgrims jammed all available hotel space. Pope Pius, who granted an audience to 30,000 pilgrims Wednesday, planned to spend Maundy
Thursday in prayer and meditation. In London, Queen Elizabeth followed ancient tradition today to distributing token “Maundy money' 'to the aged poor of her kingdom. But she broke a 300-year-old custom by taking the ceremony out of London, to St. Albans Abbey. The archbishops of Cologne and Munich in West Germany wash the feet of 12 parishioners today as Christ dia for his 12 disciples before the Last Supper. Trucker Is Killed In Freak Accident LOGANSPORT, Ind. (UP) — Edward Giese, 26, Erie, Pa., was killed today in a freak truck accident on a U.
