Ike Doctrine Lashed By Sen. Mansfield Urges Eisenhower Exert Leadership WASHINGTON (UP*) — Senate Democratic Whip Mike Mansfield Monday night charged the Eisenhower Doctrine has smashed the Western alliance in the Middle East. i He said the doctrine means the United States now must go-it-alone in the trouble-ridden area. Mansfield also said on the ABCTV program “Press Conference” President Eisenhower should exert more leadership in foreign policy. "He didn’t do much during the first four years in his early leadership and has done very little more now,” the Montana Democrat said. “He will really have to get out and work if he wants to get his programs through. If he thinks enough of ahy of his programs he ought to take them to the people—if he feels he is meeting much opposition in Congress.” Mansfield indicated the Eisenhower Doctrine has not done much so far '.'ward strengthening the West. “The only thing which has happened since the resolution was passed to change the picture slightly is the fact that militarily we have come more into the Baghdad Pact,” he said. TRUCE (ContlswTO from Fagt One> to agree to include Western modificaions in its plan to operate the canal thus far have been unsuccessful and reports say the issue now may go to the UN. Security Council. Meanwhile, in London, the Briish Foreign Office said it was awaiting "fuller information” from Washington on the latest developments in the U.S.-Egyptian talks on the Suez Canal in Cairo.
