The theory is that in the > sudden deceleration, a passenger . in a rearward seat is pressed . against the cushioned back instead , of being thrown forward. Safety Research Continues Aviation scientists see more promise in other air safety research projects. The Guggenheim Aviation Safety Center at Cornell University has 213 separate safety projects in progress. They deal with such subjects as airport lighting, ditching techniques, metal fatigue, turbulence, runway de-icing, stall warning devices, altimeter accuracy, automatic throttle control for approaches, cockpit visibility, antiskid brakes, mow and ice removal chemicals for parked planes, and even an experiment involving utilization of a jet engine’s blast as a windshield wiper in heavy rain. Important safety progress has been made by such research in the past Such developments as im- • proved wing de-icers, fire extinguishing devices built into the engines, airborne radar to avoid bad weather and various malfunction warning devices that tip off pilots to unsuspected troubles. Excursion Ship's Captain Arrested Dereliction Os Duty Charged By Japanese TOKYO (UP)—Police arrested the captain of the cherry blossom excursion ship Kitagawa Maru Saturday for causing the death ‘of 93 persons by turning over the steering wheel to an unlicensed 16-year-old apprentice. The Kitagawa Maru, overloaded to three times its capacity, tipped over and sank when apprentice seaman Tsuneji Shigemori swung the ship’s stern into a shoal in the Inland Sea Friday. Police arrested Nobuya Kawaguchi, 30-year-old skipper of the ferry boat, on a charge of dereliction of duty. They questioned officials of the Geibi Shipping Company, the vessels’s owners, to fix responsibility for the overloadign. The ship had a capacity of 77 passengers besides its four crew members.
