(UP) —A 5-year-old boy, rescued minutes before death from inside a locked home deepfreezer where he was trapped for nearly an hour, survived the cold because he went into-hibernation like an animal, it was reported Thursday. Dr. Walter C. Ralton said he administered treatment for frostbite of the feet ah’d hands Wednesday to little Theo DeHoog, who was rescued by his mother, Mrs. Daniel DeHoog, from a chest-type freezer into which he had climbed and locked himself. “Ulis was the most interesting case I’ve ever handled,”, the Garden Grove physician said. "Hibernation saved the life of the boy.” Dr. Ralton' said the zero temperature inside the freezer low ered Theo’s metabolism so fast that he went to sleep before he could struggle much. “This conserved the oxygen in the closed food closet,” the doctor said. “Hie boy would have died — he missed death by minutes — if his mother hand’t found him.” i Mrs. DeHoog said she went into the garage to get some frozen meat for an early dinner when she heard a low moan from within the freezer. “I opened it and there he was sleeping,” she said. Grandmother Held In Strangling Death Ex-Mental Patient Slays Granddaughter WESTBY, Wis. (UP)— Authorities Thursday held a 44-year-old grandmother who strangled her infant granddaughter and then attempted to choke her own daughter with a rope. Mrs. Ashild Douglas, a former mental patient from Denver. Colo., admitted strangling 18-month-old Susan Stafslien Wednesday and then choking her own daughter, Debra, 7. She was taken to the Mendota State Hospital under heavy sedation. Coroner Robert Starr said Mrs. Douglas was left with Susan while the tot's mother, Mrs. Lincoln Stafslien, went on a shopping trip to Madisofi. He said the strangling occurred in the home of Mrs. Douglas' father, Ben Logan. Starr said Mrs. Douglas str ant gled • Susan with her hands and then telephoned the grade school her daughter attended and asked that the girl be sent home. She put the rope around Debra's neck as soon as she arrived, Starr said. A neighbor, Mrs. Laverne Roehl, saved the girl’s life when she went to the Logan home after receiving a telephone call from a worried teacher at Debra’s school who knew of her mother’s mental background. Authorities said Mrs. Douglas, a mother of five children, had previously been placed in an institution when she suffered a nervous breakdown. They said she had been released three months ago and had lived with her father since then. Starr said her husband was still in Denver. Open House Friday At Lutheran School Open house will be held Friday evening, 7 to 8:30, by the first grade and teacher, Miss Evelyn Nussbaum, of Zion Lutheran parish school, West Monroe street. The program will begin in the classroom with Miss Nussbaum demonstrating with the children the opening of a typical school day. Following the demonstration of a lesson in reading and religion, the teacher and the pastor of the church, the Rev. Edgar P. Schmidt, will conduct a discussion period on matters of interest to the parents and visitors, including an explanation by Miss Nussbaum on "How Reading Is Taught.” At the close of the evening, Ught refreshments of the room mothers and devotions will be conducted by Rev. Schmidt. A special invitation has been extended to parents of present first graders. A welcome is extended also to parents who plan to enroll their children in the Lutheran school first grade next fall and all others interested in church-sup-ported elementary education. Queen And Husband f End Visit To Paris Regal Farewell At Dinner Wednesday PARIS (UP)—Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip ended their "unforgettable” visit to Paris Thursday with a farewell so reluctant the Queen's husband nearly fell on his face. Philip was waving enthusiastically at the crowd at Le Bourget Field as he climbed the narrow gangway into the royal Viscount airliner. Suddenly he tripped on a step but he grabbed the handrail just in time to avoid falling in front of dozens of photographers. Without further incident they took off for a trip to Flanders Fields where more than a million Britons died in two world wars. After three days in Paris packed with pleasure and protocol, the Queen ahd Prince flew to Lille, the oft liberated gate to France, and its "annex,” Roubaix. The royal couple planned to take off for England in their Viscount later in the day leaving behind a country which a gallant Frenchman quipped “no English army could conquer with arms'; but which surrendered to a queen’s smile.” Eighty cannon shots marked the Queen’s departure from Paris where she spent three “unforgettable days” to use her own words. Thursday night the capital gave her a regal farewell at a dinner for 210 selected guests in the sumptuous Salle des Cariatides of the Louvre Palace, once the city home of France’s kings and queens. A crowd of 5,000 Parisians waited throughout the cold windy night to cheer the Queen as she returned to Elysee Palace before midnight. INDIANA (Continued from fm« Gn«) Peters said the $25,000 for the back halves of the lots was paid by the state to “a third person”— not the original owners of the lots. The Times quoted one commissioner as saying “no matter what the outcome of today’s meeting, all appraisers and buyers in the right-of-way division Will be fired.” Owners Got $2,500 The Times said the original owners of the Madison Ave. lots got a total of $2,500 for the back sections which highway records showed cost the state $25,000. The Times said that was “a $22,500’ profit for a ‘middleman’.” The Times said other “questionable” land-buying deals involved the Evansville Expressway and the Tri-State Expressway at Gary. Shortly after Peters took office Jan. 15 in the administration of Governor Handley, he fired or permitted to resign about 50 workers in the right-of-way department. Later, the department was reorganized with Charles M. Dawson, former Indiana lieutenant governor, as director and 17 workers were rehired. “Some of these same people figure in the latest scandal,” the Times said.
