Home Runs By Redlegs Help Warren Hacker By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer Warren Hacker, who was plagued by the home run ball for many years, js discovering why Cincinnati Redleg pitchers call it their best friend. Hacker, who won only three games for the Chicago Cubs last season, chalked up his fourth victory of the Grapefruit League campaign Tuesday when the Redlegs unleashed a barrage of six homers to beat the Washington Senators. 9-7. The Redlegs have walloped a total of nine homers behind Hacker this spring and scored 36 runs in the five games he’s pitched. Wally Post blasted two homers and Gus Bell, Ted Kluszewski, Frank Robinson and Jerry Lynch hit one each as the Redlegs made it 40 round-trippers in 29 exhibition games. That’s a pace of 212 over a 154 - game stretch compared to their record-tying total of 221 last season. Bums Edge Braves The National League champion Brooklyn Dodgers snapped a four--gonte losing streak when they whipped the Milwaukee Braves, 5-4, with a four-run, rally in the ninth inning. A record crowd of 9,147 at Tulsa. Okla., saw Charley Neal’s bases - filled double break up the contest after Warren Spahn in one of his few appearances against the Dodgers, yielded only three hits and one run over the first six frames. Al Worthington and Joe Margoneri collaborated in a five-hitter as the New York Giants downed the Cleveland Indians, 4-2. Worthington allowed both Cleveland runs and four hits in the first seven innings. Ray Narleski, working for the first time since he suffered a broken finger on March 13. pitched two hitless innings for the Indians. Rookie Paees Cubs Cal Neeman, a rookie who still hopes to beat out Ray Katt or Charley Silvera for the Chicago Cubs’ regular catching job, drove in four runs with a homer and two doubles in an 8-3 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles. The Chicago White Sox made

only five hits but collected 14 walks to take a 6-5 decision over the St. Louis Cardinals. Sam Jones, Bob Mabe and Jim Davis were the pitching culprits for the Cardinals. Jones was the worst offender, yielding five hits and seven walks and hitting two men in five frames. Andy Carey bopped an eight-in-ning homer that enabled the New York Yankees to beat the Milwaukee Braves’ Jacksonville farm club of the Sally League, 5-4. Mickey Mantle also homered for the Yankees and kept his spring average at .350. • George Brunet and Ken Johnson, optioned out by Kansas City only this week, pitched seven-hit ball as the Little Rock Travelers embarrassed the parent Athletics, 5-4. r Boston Celtics take Net Playoff Lead BOSTON (IP) - The Boston Celtics were a confident lot Wednesday as they headed west to meet the St. Louis Hawks, needing just one more game to clinch their first National Basketball Association championship. A victory for the Celtics Thursday night in the sixth game of the NBA title series would give Boston its first league crown in eleven years. Bill Sarman poured in 32 points, 20 during Boston’s second half surge Tuesday night, to give the Celtics a 124-109 victory here and a 3-2 edge in the playoffs. Sharman had brilliant assistance from former Holy Cross stars Bob Cousy and rookie Tommy Heinsohn while leading the Celtics out of early disorganization to the vital triumph. The two ex-Crusaders, with 21 and 23 points respectively, caught fire with Sharman as Boston battled back fro ma 60-59 half time disadvantage to win going away. The spectacular Boston teamwork overshadowed another typical starring display by St. Louis ace Bob Pettit, who was the game's high scorer with 33 points. He. Cliff Hagan and Jack McMahon were the big men in keeping St. Louis in the battle most of the way. But the Hawks—playing with just eight men — didn’t have enough guns to keep up with the Celtics. Gene Fullmer Confident Os Keeping Title 4 CHICAGO (UP)—Ray “Sugar” Robinson will have to be a better fighter May 1 than he was Jan. 2 in order to regain the middfe weight championship, titleholder Gene Fullmer said Wednesday. "If that was an average fight for him,” Fullmer said, “I don’t think I’ve got much to worry about.” Fullmer said that Robinson fought “almost a perfect defensive fight” when he decisioned Sugar Ray in New York Jan. 2 to win the 160 pound crown. Made Two Mistakes “I’d say he only made about two mistakes,” Fullmer said, “and I didn’t hit him real well then. But he only gave me two good shots at him and that’s almost perfect.” Fullmer, the early 7-2 favorite and already in training here for the May 1 title bout, has won his last 11 bouts and has lost only three times in 4i pro outings. His last defeat was Nov. 25, 1955 by Eduardo, Lausse. The only other fighters to beat him werfe Bobby Boyd, Sept. 28, 1955, and Gil Turner, April 4, 1955. Since then he has beaten Turner twice. ’Don’t get the idea Robinson isn’t a good fighter,” Fullmer said. “He never hurt me in our fight, although I guess he thinks he did once. No Advance Strategy “But when a fighter doesn’t give you much chance to hurt him, he’s a pretty good fighter. I think he was kinda of worried about going 15 rounds, too, and for this fight, he’ll probably be just as-worried.” Fullmer and his manager, Marv Jensen, kept secret any strategy they might use in the rematch with Robinson. “We didn’t fight him the first time the way we thought we would,” Jensen said, “so even if we planned to fight him one way this time, we might not do it that way. It depends on what Robinson does.” “Gene’s got a lot of things going for him," Jensen said. “He’s got awfully quick hands, a lot of stamina and strength, and he can take a good punch.” Bowling Scores Minor League W L Pts. Montreal Leading In Hockey Playoff MONTREAL - (W - The Montreal Canadians, powered by two clutch playoff victories in their own Forum, are ready to move into Boston Thursday with a 2-0 lead over the Bruins in defense of their Standley Cup hockey title. The flexible Canadiens came up with “an oldtime playoff game” Tuesday night to edge the Bruins 1-0, in the second game following a spectacular wide-open first game Saturday in which Maurice (Rocket) Richard scored four times. J’But we will have to show more offensive strength if we hope to win the Boston, said cautious Toe Blake, coach of the Habitants. “We were weak offensively, especially in the second period after Beliveau (center Jean Beliveau) scored.” “That was really a playoff game,, through,” he said. "One of the old-timers. I think maybe they (the Canadians) started protecting that one-goal lead kind of soon, but it was still the best defensive game we have played.” In recent weeks Blake has complained about his defense, but he had no fault to find with it Tuesday night. Goalie Jacques Plante came up with “his best game of the series” and his sixth shutout in playoff competition. It also marked the first time the Bruins had been blanked in 69 games. The close-checking game was in sharp contrast to Saturday’s wideopen opener. The only score of the game came early in the second period when Beliveau walked in on goalie Don Simmons and beat the game rookie netminder after five or six fakes. “I came straight in, shifted to the left and shot. It passed him on the right side," Beliveau said. Chicago Ready To Hold 1959 Pan-Ain Games CHICAGO (UP)- The city of Chicago has re-affirmed its desire to hold the 1959 Pan American Games on the shores of Lake Michigan and said it has the money necessary for the track and field event which officially designated Cleveland doesn’t have. The Lake Erie city, designated host city for the game by the Pan American Sports Congress Executive Committee, counted on a fivemillion dollar federal appropriation for "proper financing” of the games. Not so Chicago. A spokesman for the city government said Chicago had all the money necessary and plenty of facilities in which to hold the gigantic athletic event. “Chicago will be highly honored to be selected as the city for the locale of the game.” Mayor Richard J. Daley said. With Cleveland's lack of funds, the Windy City looked as if it were the only hope of holding the games in the United States. In Washington, it was reported a House Appropriations subcommittee would not PWommend a

federal appropriation for the Sines. And several other counes — Guatemala, Mexico and Brazil—have indicated they aren’t prepared to stage the games even though they are considered alternate sites. Cleveland officials said they could not hold the Western Hemisphere sports event without the five-million dollars in federal aid. But they contend that while Cleveland was to be the host city, the United States still is designated as the host nation. Curtis Lee Smith, president of Cleveland's Chamber of Commerce, said, "We have said all along that we. . .cannot stage the games without federal help. , Rip Van Winkle Couldn’t Sleep with Naggingßackache Now (You can get the fart relief you need from nagging backache, headache and muscular achee and pains that often cause restless nights and miserable tired-out feelings. <When these discomforts come on with overexertion or stress and strain — you want relief-want it fart I Another disturbance may be mild bladder Irritation following wrong food and drink — often setting up a restless uncomfortable feeling.
