Parish priests have noted a substantial increase in the number of persons receiving Holy Communion during the two weeks since Pope Pius XII relaxed the church’s 15-century-old ment of prolonged fasting before Communion. Catholic officials here said this is precisely the result that the Holy Father hoped to achieve. They expressed confidence that the trend toward frequent Communion will continue and become even more pronounced as the new rules are explained to congregations throughout the country. ‘ The purpose of this change was to make it easier for Catholics to receive grace, or supernatural help, to lead a Godly life,” said a spokesman for the National Catholic Welfare Conference. "The Blessed Sacrament is a cfflef source of grace. Therefore the church .considers frequent Communion a most effective way of deepening the spiritual life.” Previously, under rules which, had been in effect since the sth Century, Catholics began fasting at midnight of the day on which Communion was to be received. They took neither food nor drink until after they had received the sacrament, usually at an early morning Mass. ■Die first move toward relaxation of the fasting rule came in 1953, when Pope Pius authorized the holding of evening Masses on a take Communion if they had gone without solid foods for three hours and without liquids for one hour. Permission of the priest was required, however, in each instance. In the new decree, effective March 25, the Pope ‘‘strongly exhorts" those who are “able to do so" to continue observing the traditional rule of fasting from midnight. But there is no longer any obligation for any Catholic, priest or layman, to fast for more than three hours preceding Holy Communion, whether it be taken at a morning or an evening Mass. The new rules make it clear that alcoholic beverages, like solid foods, must not be taken for three hours before Communion. But they permit water or medicine to be taken at any time.
