Smoke rising in Jordan is from demolitions on British ammunition dumps as • result of abrogation of the British-Jordanian treaty. Mountains are in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia and Egypt claim the gulf is their territorial water, and imply it will be closed to Israeli shipping. Thus Elath is an explosive point. (International

Soil Bank Compliance Payments Outlined Adams county farmers participating in the soil bank acreage reserve program will receive payments when compliance with provisions of the program can be fully determined. Leo. N. Seltenright, county agent, said today compliance with soil bank acreage limitations is in general on a harvested rather than a planted basis. In many instances compliances cannot be checked until harvest To be eligible for any soil bank payments, a farmer must comply with all acreage allotments established for his farm. This too, Seltenright said, delays the final check until about havest time for the latest of the crops Involved. Where only winter wheat acreage

is involved, payment certificates under the 1«57 acreage reserve program may be issued this summer. Where other acreages also are involved and compliance check must be made for several crops, certificates cannot be issued until the actual use of the latest havested crop is determined. Additional information on payments can be obtained at the local agricultural stabilization and conservation office, 130% N. 2nd St., Decatur.
