agreed that the best team won. Coach Elmer McCall's top-rank-ing powerhouse smashed Indianapolis Attucks' bid for a recordtying third consecutive title. 67-55, Saturday night to equal the Tigers' 1956 achievement of "going all the way” undefeated. The upstaters, also champs in 1953 in McCall’s first year, finished with a 30-game winning streak. Attucks’ tourney triumph string stopped at 29. Central rolled over ailing Lafayette in the afternoon, 54-36, while Attucks upset previously oncebeaten Terre Haute Gerstmeyer, the No. 2 crew, 85-71. The terrific brother act of John and Sylvester Coalmon, probably the toughest one-two rebounding punch ever witnessed in the championship classic, coupled with the outside shooting of Lee McKnight and the brilliant floor work of Herbie Lee were too much for Attucks. “Our board' worK made the difference,’’ said McCall. "I thought the turning point came in the third period when McKnight hit from the side.” • That gave South Bend a 41-28 lead. Coalman Ties Record John Coalmon, Central’s 6-4 senior center, dunked in 24 points in the championship match to'tie the final four-game record of 106 set by the fabulous Oscar Robertson of Attucks last year. Robertson witnessed the finals from press row. The Coaimons outhustled Attucks on the boards, and when one of them missed a shot the other usually was there to tip it in. “They were just too much on the boards,” said Attucks coach Ray Crowe. ‘They were just as good as everybody said they were. They also outshot us. , “We gave it all we had but they were top strong for us. But I’m real proud of my boys. They all played like champions .. .” Central hit a red-hot .492 from the field, Attucks .333. Central led at all stops—l 3-10, 29-22, 49-38. The lead changed

hands half a dozen times during the opening minutes and the score was tied once, but Central’s sizzling shooting and rebounding power gradually and methodically turned the table. Attucks. trailing by 12, made a last-ditch rally late in the final period when little Laverne Benson hit twice and Albert Maxey added another fielder to cut South Bend’s margin to 59-53. But Sylvester Coalmen's two freethrows and Lee's one-hander iced the game. McKnight poured in 16 points,. Sylvester Coalmon 12. Maxey and Benson topped Attucks with 18 apiece. Tigers Avenge Defeat Attucks avenged its 63-57 setback at Gerstmeyer last November with a bristling rapid-fire attack to spice the afternoon round. The clutch-shooting of Maxey and Benson and the rebounding of Odell Donel and Edgar Searcy were more than an equalizer for Howard Dardeen’s 33 points in a losing effort. Gerstmeyer poured on the heat from the start to take an 8-2 lead but the Black Cats led only 22-20 at the first stop. Midway through the second stanza, Attucks put together eight straight points and took a 35-33 lead on Maxey's shot from the side. The Tigers were never headed. When center Charley Hall fouled out with 3:56 to go. gerstmeyer came apart at the seams. Maxey led Attucks with 25 points. Lafayette, with three players ailing 24 hours before the finals, was no match for the big Bears. The undermanned Broncos stayed with the towering South Benders for most of the first half, but miserable shooting killed their chances of reaching the title game for the second straight year. South Bend was in front at the half, 28-22, and 40-30 with one period to go. Jerry Heath and Lynn Cooper fouled out for Lafayette in the final minutes. John Coalmon had to settle for nine points—he left the game early in the third period and didn’t get back in until late—thus losing his chance to re-write Robertson s record. Lafayette bagged only seven fielders, one each in the last three periods. Coach Marion Crawley said his team was at a great physical disadvantage, but added he was surprised “our defense held up as it did." “A few more baskets and we would have been right in there,” he said. However, he added his boys would have been a “pushover” at night because “they were weakening all the time.” Best Team Won “I believe the best team , won,” he said. It was the first time in Crawley’s brilliant coaching history including three state champs that his team Mas been licked by the same foe three times in one season. Gerstmeyer’s Howard Sharpe said, “the team I thought woifld win, did it. But I didn’t expect to get beat.” “I was disappointed because I I was disappointed because I thought this was our best team in five years and had a chance to go the distance. But they (Attucks) killed us on the boards, and there just didn’t seem to be anything we could do to catch up once we fell behind.” McCall, who said this “definitely” was his best team, plans to take his family on a vacation “in about a week.” He was rumored as a possible successor to Northwestern University hardwood coach Waldo Fisher but said there’s "nothing ‘ definite.” He added he “would be interested,” if the offer were made. Sharpe said he received “three good coaching offers” Saturday night, but “I'll probably turn them down.” Boston Celtics Enter Championship Round By UNITED PRESS The Boston Celtics were safely berthed today fc> the championship round of the National Basketball Association playoffs, and the St. louis Hawks will try to join them by beating Minneapolis a third straight time tonight. Bradley Wins NIT Crown In Thriller NEW YORK (UP) — Bradley’s “rich” National Invitation Tournament champions will be even “richer” next season — probably battling NCAA champion North Carolina and Kansas for the No. 1 national basketball ranking. “We should be a better team next season,” Bradley Coach Chuck Osborn proclaimed in the wake of his Braves’ 84-83 win over Memphis State in Saturday’s NIT final, and the “experts” were quick to agree'with him. “We don’t lose anybody at all from this year’s team," the rookie coach pointed out. “And in addition, we have stars coming up from a freshman team that had an unbeaten 15-0 record.” Three-Pointer Wins It Leading the parade of returning stars will be Shellie McMilloh, whose three-point play with 29 seconds left clinched the title game, and Barney Cable and. Bobby Mason, both named to the AllNIT team. They’re backed up already by so many strong players that Memphis Coach Bob Vanatta conceded, “They just had too many shooters for us—every one was a scoring threat down to the sixth and seventh men.” Hie future isn’t quite as bright for Memphis State’s gallant “Upset Kids” who came heart-breik-ingly close to grabbing the top prize in their very first NIT appearance. The Tigers lose only two men — but they ar4 “most valuable player” Win Wilfong, and hard-driving little Jack Butcher, also an all-tourney selection. The only non-finalist to make the all-NIT team was Guy Rodgers of Temple. The Owls won consolation honors by defeating St. Bonaventure, 67-50. Wilfong Fouled Out Wilfong’s absence on personal fouls hurt the Tigers in the filial 29 seconds of play, just after McMillon had slapped in a rebound shot to tie the score for Bradley at 83-83 and then, fouled on the play by Bob Swander, added a free throw that proved the winning point. Vanatta, who coached Bradley last year, disclosed that Memphis took an “all for broke” gamble at this point. “We held the ball for one last shot, and that would win the championship or lose it.” said Vanatta. “But when (Bob) Swander "finally got to take the shot after a scramble, he had only a very tough shot." Swander, who won a semi-final game in the final second with a basket, tried a “much longer” one-hander this time and missed even the backboard. — Monticello's Coach To Move To LaPorte MONTICELLO, Ind (IP) — John Bastin, coach of the Monticello Tioga Indians high school basketball team the last three years, announced today he has signed a one-year contract to be head coach at LaPorte high school. SENATE (Continued trom Pont On» Court and possibly the State and Treasury Departments. GI Housing: The House called up for debate a bill to liberalize the government’s program of direct loans to veterans in rural areas. The loans would be made when private funds for such loans are not available. Bohlen: Sen. Styles Bridges (R---NY) said he will oppose the nomination of Charles E. Bohlen to be U.S. ambassador to the Philippines. Bridges, a member of the Senate GOP leadership, said Bohlen has not been “loyal to the secretary of state” and has not agreed with some of the secretary’s views. He added he does not think Bohlen did a good job as ambassador to Russia. Trade in a good town — Decatar

Chicago Cubs Start On Long Range Project MESA, Aru.. (UP)—Renovated from top to bottom, the Chicago Cubs set out this season on a longrange project to climb from the bottom to the top of the National League. Bob Scheffing, new manager of the club, says: “We have set our sights on progress, not miracles, this year.. .The main thing being to get out of eighth place." “We fixed two very .weak spots when we acquired two capable catchers and a hard-hitting third baseman," said Scheffing, pointing to Charlie Silvera and Ray Katt, behind the plate, and Ray Jablonski, at third. > Hurter Prospects Good “Our pitching should be pretty good,” said, and listed veterarfcßob Rush, the six - foot, five-inch right - hander, and bonus baby Myron (Moe) Drabowsky as two potential "big winners.” ’ In addition, the staff includes Jim Bronsam, 5-9; Don Kaiser, 4-9; Turk Lown, 9-8 and Vito Valentinetti, 64, all witp the Cubs last year, along with Jack Collum and Tom Poholsky, acquired la a deal with St. Louis. • Scheffing believes, he has the best keystone combination in the business in home-run hitting Ernie Banks at shortstop, and Gene Baker, who also cah hit the long ball, at second base. The only problem is that Banks has a chronic sore arm and may be switched to first base. First-sack-er Dee Fondy hit .300 and .309 in 1952 and 1953, but hasn’t been close to that figure since. Jablonski, because of his runs-batted-in record, probably will get the call at third base, although George Freese, up from Los Angeles, is given a good chance to stick with the club. Outfield Troublesome The outfield appears to offer Scheffing 'the most trouble. He needs heavy hitting at those positions, and the record shows he may not have it. Welt Moryn, the 223-pound exDodger, appears to be the only “cinch" in the outfield. The big right fielder hit .285, blasted 23 home runs and drove in 67 runs for the Cubs last year. Scheffing has hopes that Jim Bolger, who had a great year at Los Angeles hitting .326, including 28 homers and 147 RBl’s, can take pver either left or Centerfield. Gale Wade, a speedy flychaser with three previous major league tries, is in center field at present. • Stanley Cup Playoffs Begin Tuesday Night .
