Minister Conducts Rites For Trooper Funeral Oration By Shooting Minister NEW ALBANY, Ind. (UPI—A Methodist minister who killed a bank bandit with a riot gun delivered impassively today a funeral oration for a state trooper the robber shot while trying to escape. The Rev. Robert Gingery, 37, was one of two ministers who conducted services in Gingery’s Trinity Methodist Church here for Sgt. Marvin Walts, 49, who fell with a bullet in his head during a threeway gun battle Monday afternoon. Gingery prayed, read Bible verses and poems and told of Walts' religious life from the pulpit of the church where the trooper worshiped, while a crowd of more than 600 persons filled the sanctuary and spilled over into the street outside the church. The gun-wielding minister whose shotgun blast killed William Hassett, 25, Louisville, Ky., a few minutes after a $1,655 bank holdup at Sellersburg, Ind., appeared calm as he conducted the services with the aid of another minister. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord,” the Rev. Gingery said as he started the service. He described Walts’ life with reference to his close association to the church. Among the mourners were many fellow state troopers and law enforcement authorities from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Illinois. Six troopers who, like Walts, also are members of the Masonic order, carried the casket from a mortuary across the street from the church. The Rev. Floyd Cook, superintendent of the Methodist district where Gingery’s church is located, also eulogized Walts. "He was kind to all he dealt with to the very last, even in pur-1 suit of duty,” the Rev. Cook said. Indiana State Police Supt. Harold Zeis and Paul Schnaitter, secretary of the State Police Board, were among the mourners. The entire staff of the Charlestown police district, where Walts was assigned, attended en masse while troopers from other posts manned i their jobs. Gingery was with Walts for a luncheon engagement on the trooper’s day off, marking the anniversary of Walts’ affiliation with Gingery’s church, when an emergency call came to search for the fleeing bandit. Hassett whipped out a gun when Walts stopped the getaway car, shot Walts and fired at the minister before Gingery killed him by a blast through the chest with the trooper’s riot gun.
