J. G. Newsom, chairman of the State Tax Board, said no word has been received from Bloomington, where ’•♦■dents protested by three*. ; boycotting local mercha . “1 wouldn’t be doing my duty,” Bc< laid said, “if I didn’t assess the students. My position as county assessor would be in jeopardy with the State Tax Board." Mimeographed sheets of paper signed with the name of the “AllCampus Anti - Tax Committee” were distributed around the campus calling for students to “arise” against “unrealistic attempt” to tax them. “While we have no means for recourse,” the papers said, "we must express our disapproval in the only way available, a strict boycott of all Bloomington merchants, until Monroe County stops this silliest thing ever heard of." ,Borland said taxpayers foot the bill for educating in the public schools about 200 children of university students. Newsom declined comment on the Monroe County situation except to say:
Confirms Offer Os $1 Million For Herb Score SARASOTA, Fla. <UPi-General Manager Joe Cronin of the Boston Red Sox confirmed today that he made a •‘serious cash offer" of Simillion for Cleveland strikeout king Herb Score and bristled at a suggestion that the fabulous offer was a publicity stunt. 4 “I was and am definitely serious—certainly the offer was made in good faith," Cronin told skeptical reporters after General Manager Hank Greenberg of the IndiI ans revealed he had rejected the deal. “I offered him sl-million for Score and told him to take the offer to the Indians' board of directors. "Greenberg said he'd give me a ring," Cronin went on. “I didn't expect him to say anything about the offer. But, now that he has, fit’s true." Hit Like Bomb-shell Greenberg’s statement hit the major league training sites like a bomb-shell and produced reaction ranging from stunning disbelief to statements like “Bill J/eeck is running the show” and “Cronin and Greenberg just dreamed that up to produce a headline.” Even Boston fans conceded “sl-m ill io n seems awful hard to believe.” But in Tucson, Ariz., Manager ’ Kerby Farrell of the Indians told the United Press: “Mr. Greenberg did a very reasonable thing and I am glad he did. I would not trade Score for Mickey Mantle or Al Kaline. ’ c Cronin and Greenberg had slightly different versions of exactly how the offer — four times the record amount ever paid for a major league player—was made. Proposal Unfolds "Greenberg and I sat down Monday and tried to work out every possible combination for a deal,7 said Cronin, “I finally said, ‘l’m offering you Sl-million for Score. Take that to your board of directors.’ We didn’t shake hands. Greenberg said he’d give me a ring.” “We were discussing another deal involving a pitcher,” said Greenberg. "Finally Cronin said, ‘l'd give a million dollars for a sure 20-game winner—a pitcher like Score.’ I replied, ‘Do you i mean you would give me Jl-mil- ! lion for Score?' and he said, ‘Yes, I think I would.’ I hesitated a moment and said, ’Well, I wouldn’t take it.’ ” Score, a 23-year old New Yorkborn left-hander who got a $60,000 bonus to sign with Cleveland, set a record for a rookie by striking out 245 batters in 1955 and last season whiffed 263 while compiling a 20-9 record. His 1956 strikeout ' total was the highest in the majors
