U.S. Farmers Lower Acreage • For '57 Crops Likely To Produce Bumper Crop With t Reduced Acreage WASHINGTON (UP)—American , farrtiers this year are expected to ! produce a bumper crop on the I smallest acreage in 40 years. ' The Agriculture Department es- [ timated Monday that on the basis [ of farmers’ planting intentions as , of March 1, this year’s crop will ! be grown on 334 million acres—l 2 . million acres or 3.5 per cent under I the 1956 acreage which produced ■ a record-tying crop. In 1917 farm. , ers planted 331 million, but pro- . duced a crop far off the 1956 ’ total. Department officials are not counting on a crop production ’ comparable to the acreage reduction. Farmers have away of increasing their yields on reduced ; acreage with better types of seed, ! improved fertilizer, and all-round i advances in agricultural technology. They have proved it before, I and may come up with a 1957 overall crop equal to or near the ’ 1956 production. The department reported prospective corn plantings this year at '■ 74.4 million acres. If yields approximate the 1951-55 average, production would amount to 2.9 I billion bushels. 20 Million Acres in Bank The intended planted acreage is the smallest in 70 years, a long ‘ stretch dating back to president ■ Cleveland’s first term when the nation had about 100 million fewer persons to feed. But the prospec- . tive acreage for 1957 is only 5.3 i per cent under the 1956 acreage ■ when 3.5 billion bushels—the sec- ■ ond largest crop in history—was ’ produced. This whopping crop was

grown on an acreage 11 per cent smaller than average. The planting Intentions report indicated that many farmers are reducing their acreage on such basic crops as corn, wheat, peanuts, rice, and tobacco, but are increasing the use of crop land for other crops. The latest department report on soil bank partici pation showed that about 20 million acres have been deposited in the soil bank acreage reserve and about 3.5 million acres have been put into the conservation reserve. This adds up to about 23.5 million acres on which farmers will receive government payments for not producing crops. The soil bank acreage is almost double the 12 million acres they have indicated they will cut from the overall acreage total. Soybean Acreage Up Specific planting intentions for other crops: Spring wheat plantings may total only 12.8 million acres, the smallest on record and 21 per .cent smaller than 1956 and one-third smaller than average. Oats acreage is expected to be 43.5 million, 3 per cent less than last year and only slightly less than average. Barley may be planted on 16 million acres, up nearly 9 per cent from last year and almost onethird more than average. Soybean acreage at 22.7 million is up 3.5 per cent and the highest of record. Sorghums may total 26.5 million acres, up 23 per cent from 1956 and 75 per cent above average. Hay acres at 72.8 million are down 1 per cent from last year and 2 per cent from average. Tobacco at 1,132,000 acres is 17 per cent less than in 1956 and nearly one-third less than average. Potatoes total acreage at 1.4 million is up less than 1 per cent from 1956 while the prospective acreage for the late summer and fall crops combined at 1,068,000 acres is down 1.5 per cent from last year.
