Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, woes to hypocrites, Hatt. 23:13-15; 23-28; 37-39 for Sunday, March 24. Parables, questions and answers now gave place to a dramatic direct pronouncement of judgment from Jesus upon the Jerusalem leaders. He issuel a public warning against them and against all who are guilty of hypocrisy. jV. 13. "But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven again men: for -ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. "This is the first of eight woes Christ pronounced against certain types: of people in the Jp* of bis try. lust as he had pronounced eight “blesseds” in the begiqdidg of his ministry on certain lon©': of people. In this verse ChtttCPon.djemns for failure to recognize and receive him, and, by their rejection of him, influenced others to do likewise. The Pharaisees had become a closed and snobbish fraternity in which they shut the doors against sincere searchers of truth because of their emphasis on the letter rather than the spirit of the law. V. 14. "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites I for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater dammation. "For religious leaders to be so covetous as to impoverish widows was an unspeakable sin, adding cruelty to hyprocrisy. V. 15. “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hyprocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make ode proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell man yourselves. "Proselyte means alien or stranger. The Jews were zealous'in winning new members, but their religion was only an external matter, involving no change of attitude toward God, merely going tnrough certain ceremonies. False religious systems make proselytes; Christianity makes tiue converts, -who ’make ! God first in their lives. - Vs. 23, 24. “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and ' cummin, and have omitted the Weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. . . Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, but swallow a camel. “Christ t does not minimize the importance of tithing, but emphasizes the importance of the spirit rather than the letter of the law. To profess religion without qualities of judgment and mercy is the height of absurdity. Vs. 25, 26. “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within are full of extortion and excess. Thmou blind Pharisee, cleanse . first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also." A good religious front was sustained by a squeeze system in dealing with their fellowman. Ceremonial righteous can never compensate for inner wickedness and cruelty. - nn nnuoi Vs. 27,28. "Wfie ypifc scribes and Pharisees, hyprocitesTTor ye are" like unto whifctf jsepuTchresj which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within' fall of dead men's bones, and of all uncleaness . . Even so ye also outwardly appear Righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.” It was regarded as a serious offense to tread upon graves and made one ceremonially unclean, so sepulchres were white washed to be seen more clearly. The whitewashed tombs were

beautiful outside, but held only dead bones inside. To presume to be spiritually alive outside, but spiritually dead is hypocrisy. Vs. 37 , 38. "□ Jerusalem* thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto ithee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! .... Behok), your house is left unto you desolate.” The blood of the martyrs would come upon those who rejected Christ, who had exerted every effort to win the hearts of the people of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was destroyed as predicted in A. D. 70 by the Roman General Titus. V. 39. "ForJ say unto you. Ye shall not see me henceforth ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” Jesus had uttered his last public discourse and was leaving the temple for the last time, “till ye rU say. . . probably refers Christ's second coming when he would be known to all as the Son of God. • ' FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH -Traverse W.
