Mike McCoy, and the Gorillas were ousted from the tourney in the regional opener, 56-40. Taking full advantage of his one-foot advantage over even the tallest of the Gorillas, McCoy propped in 22 points, 17 of them in the first half, as the Archers led all the way. South* was on top at the first quarter, 19-10, at the half, 34-24, and at the third period, 47-36. The Gorillas went down battling, however, and with a little better shooting luck, would have made the final result considerably closer. Hartford hit only 14 of 59 attempts from the field, while the Archers made 23 of 55. From the foul line, the GoriUas converted 12 of 19, South Side 10 of 26. McCoy led all the scorers with 22 points, with Carl Stavreti adding 11 for the Archers. Koger Moser scored 11 points and Larry Gene Dubach 10 for the Gorillas. Railroaders Win Garrett raced to an early lead in the second afternoon game and won over Kendallville more easily than expected. The Railroaders built up an 18-7 lead in the first half, were in front at the half, 34-19, and at the third period, 4832. Larry Getts, Garrett’s center, topped the scorers with 23 points ami Dan Hutton added 13. Jerry Brown proved the only offensive threat for the Comets with 16. Garrett, hitting well, made 24 field goals in 56 attempts, Kendallville only 16 of 61. From the fpul line, Garrett made 15 of 23, Kendallville 13 of 23. South Side Champs South hurried to an early 8-0 lead in the championship contest, but Garrett rallied to pull within only two points, 14-12, at the end of the first quarter. But the Archers broke loose again in the second period and boosted their advantage to 33-21 at the half, and to 20 points at 49-29 at the third quarter. South had well balanced scoring in this encounter, McCoy counting 15 points, Dave Matthias and Danny Howe 12 each, and ChristStavreti 10. Hutton tallied 14 and Getts 12 for the Railroaders, who hit 15 of 59 field goal attempts. Suoth connected on 29 of 65 from the field. Attucks stayed in the running for their third straight title Saturday, when the champs beat back a challenge from a good Elwood team in the regional final at Indianapolis. The Hartford City Airdales, picked by many to be in the semistate tourney at Fort Wayne Saturday. were knocked off by the 1 Marion Giants, in the Marion final i by a surprising 72-58 score. Marion had whipped Huntington, 77-43, and Hartford City ousted the Bluffton Tigers, 65-48, in afternoon games. —oOo— The opening battle at the Fort Wayne semi-state tourney Saturday at 1 p.m. probably will rank as the state’s major early clash as the 16 teams still in the race vie for the last four places in Indiana’s basketball marathon. Fort Wayne South will meet ttye undefeated Bears from South Bend Central in the opener. The Bears are outstanding choices to go dll the way to the state title. In the second Saturday game, Marion will meet Noblesville, winner at Kokomo for its first regional championship in the school's history. With the elimination of Hartford from the tourney picture, the net season ends for Adams county teams, and with the end. Basketbawl bows out until next November. See you next season! State Tourney is Reduced To Sweet Sixteen INDIANAPOLIS (UP) - The scramble for Indiana’s 47th annual high school basketball championship became a “city show” today with enough power left in the “Sweet 16” for the big showdown. Eight of the first 12 teams in the final United Press coaches poll, defending state champion Indianapolis Attucks and two other 1956 finalists, Lafayette and Terre Haute Gerstmeyer, were among the survivors from an original field of 739. At least four of the top powers will get the ax in Saturday’s four “semi-state” tourneys at Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and Lafayette. Michigan City and Hartford City, rated fifth and sixth, respectively, and the No. 8 quintet from Elkhart—the other finalist last year—were beaten Saturday. So were the final “people’s choices” — undefeated Otterbein, once-beaten Hartford Center, Morristown and Versailles, and Sandborn. , Michigan City, which stormed from behind to trip Hammond Noll in the afternoon, 50-47, got the ax from mighty Gary Roosevelt in the East Chicago night game, 89-65. Every starter for the Steel City quintet hit in double figures to wreck Michigan City's 12-game winning streak. Hartford City's Central Conference champs, beaten only once during the season and the top offensive team in the sectionals, were left at the pole at Marion, 72-58, with the host Giants avenging a regular-season setback. Central Too Powerful Elkhart, as expected, couldn’t cope with powerful South Bend Central's height and balance and went down, 66-55. The unbeaten South Benders promptly crushed little Pierceton at night in Elkhart, 89-42, for a local regional scoring record. Evansville Lincoln, Southport and Noblesville captured regional laurels for the first time. Lincoln trailed Princeton’s Southern Conference co-champs until 3:56 to go and little Charley Vance hit the winning fielder with just 24 seconds left to make it 55-53. At night, the host Lions downed stubborn Dale, 63-57. Southport outlasted two foes at Columbus by a total of four points. Madison fell, 68-65, and the host Bulldogs bowed to Blac ki e Braden’s bunch, 47-46. Noblesville, piloted by crafty Glen Harper, won at Kokomo with a 59-47 win over Delphi. Noblesville is the only team left not playing a major schedule, but the Millers do not represent a small school. Terre Haute Gerstmeyer, No. 2, rolled over Solsberry at Bloomington, 84-52, after downing Martinsville, 66-55, to make it 30-1 for the season. Lafayette, runner-up last year, had some anxious moments but handled Otterbein, 59-52, and Colfax, 62-47. Muncie Central, with Henry Johnson, a new “find,” tossing in 21 second-half points,

licked New Castle. 69-61, and Fort Wayne South dumped Garrett, 63-36. Attucks ran its regional string to five—longest alive—spanking Elwood, 78-68, but only after twice repulsing the Panthers’ dogged rally that carried them to within a point of the Tigers in the third period. Four Attucks players hit 16 points or better to go with their height advantage. Roosevelt Led Offense Gary Roosevelt, runner-up to Attucks two years ago, averaged 76.3 points in six tourney tests to lead offensive statistics. Muncie hit 73.5, Gerstmeyer and Seymour 71.8. The latter made off with* its first regional crown in 25 years, beating Marengo at Jeffersonville, 66-60. Fort Wayne South and Lincoln set the defensive pace. South Side’s Archers limited six foes to an average of 35.1 points per game, Lincoln 41.3. Lafayette

again bounced its rivals by the largest winning margin — 26.4.
