The group considered whether to stick to House-voted cuts or to go along with Senate increases. Economy: William F. He planned to appear before a Senate Banking subcommittee holding hearings on the subject. Middle East: Members of a special Senate subcommittee planned to meet soon with State Department officials, perhaps this week, to make plans for a Senate investigation of U.S. policies in the Middle East. The investigation is expected to concentrate primarily on Soviet penetration of the area and events leading up to the Suez invasion. The inquiry was approved during Senate hearings on President Eisenhower’s Middle East doctrine.
