Farm Leaders Seek To Ram Bill Through Democratic' Farm leaders Seeking Vast Expansion ‘ WASHINGTON (UP) — Democratic farm leaders sought to ram through an economy-minded House today a bill to provide for a vast expansion in federal subsidies for farmers in most sections of the country. Republicans, denouncing Democrats for “extravagance,’’ called for approval instead of an administration - backed plan to restore only the subsidy benefits most corn growers received last year. Farm congressmen of both parties said the House probably will take the advice of Rep. Howard W. Smith (D-Va) and reject both plans. Smith said Wednesday the cost of running the Agriculture Department already has soared to IS billion a year—almost half the farmers’ net income. He wondered if farmers wouldn’t be better off if Congress shut down the department and divided up the $5 billion among them. Modified Versions of Bill City representatives sat silently Wednesday as farm area congressmen from the Republican Midwest and Democratic South accused one another of backing plans that would do nothing but waste taxpayers’ money. Administration farm officials have warned that unless Congress raises the 1957 corn crop ceiling to last year’s 51 million acres, midwestern farmers will ignore the ceiling and produce price-depress-ing surpluses. The corn ceiling currently is fixed at 37.3 million acres. Both Democratic and Republican bills contain modified versions of the administration's proposal under which farmers would be required to keep part of the extra acreage out of production by putting it into the “soil bank.’’ But the Democratic plan also would open the soil bank to growers of oats, barley, rye, grain sorghums. Soybeans, flaxseed and ; corn in all areas, not just the major midwestern corn belt. Opposes “Preferred Treatment” Republicans charged this would cost an extra 6500 million tfSt ft billion a year. Democratic farm leaders acknowledged the cost would be “very substantial.” But they said funds spent in attempting to control - corn production would be wasted unless similar subsidies were offered to hold down production of other competing feed grains. Rep. W.R. Poage (D-Tex) said he was opposed to “preferred I treatment" for midwestern corn farmers. He said the GOP plan would seek to make “second class citizens” of growers of other crops elsewhere. Speaker Sam Rayburn (D-Tex) rebuked Republicans Wednesday for asserting President Eisenhower would veto the Democratic plan if it won congressional approval. He said such arguments should not be raised against legislation because Congress has just as great a responsibility as the President. Children's Services Friday Afternoon Children’s services on world day qf prayer will be held at 3:15 p.m. Friday at the Baptist church for Lincoln school children, and at the Missionary church for Northwest school pupils. Indiana Hen Lays Green Egg Daily Green Eggs Puzzle Poultry Experts NEW ALBANY, Ind. (UP>— A little red hen is tuing up for St. Patrick’s Day. It lays a green egg almost every day. John Hubbuch, 77, and his wife, Florence, 72, owners of the “new Hampshire Red” hen, said today the chicken never has laid anything but "turquoise green” eggs. The green eggs have agricultural experts puzzled. Gary East, the Hubbuch’s county agent, thought it might be something the bird ate. But Mrs. Hubbuch said she fed her entire flock the same diet—“mash, cracked corn and whole corn.” Poultrymen at Purdue University said the only explanation they could give was the hen may have had a South American ancestor. They said the araucana, a wild latin chicken, lays green eggs. But Mrs. Hubbuch said her chicken “looks like a New Hampshire Red.” ' Mrs. Hubbuch said the green eggs look like any others in the frying pan and “taste just like an ordinary egg.”
