Indiana Sixth In Farm Cash Income California Leading In Farm Marketing WASHINGTON (UP) — Indiana ranked sixth among the states in the size of cash receipts from farm marketings in 1956, the Agriculture Department said today. A report on marketings showed California leading with nearly three billion dollars in receipts. lowa was second with more than two billions, and Illinois, Texas and Minnesota exceeded Indiana’s $1,033,351,000 total. Statistics also showed that Indiana’s realized net income per farm was $2,404 in 1956, compared with $2,275 in 1955. The state’s ranking was 23rd among the states, compared with 22nd in 1955. Indiana’s net income per farm was third among the five states in the East North Central region, which had an average of $2,697, somewhat above Indiana’s average. Indiana's $2,404 average was sll lower than the average for the entire country. PREMIER (Continued from Page <~>net Emergency Force (UNEF), conferred with Maj. Gen. Prisoner Escapes By Slipping Cuffs Deputies In Allen County Red-Faced FORT WAYNE (UP) — Allen County authorities today sought a prisoner who slipped out of his handcuffs and escaped Monday while deputies herded a group of inmates from the jail to the courthouse for sentencing. Red-faced sheriff’s deputies said Paul Shaw, 29, Fort Wayne, was with the group when they started into the courthouse, but evidently managed to slip off his handcuffs and walk out unnoticed. The 6-foot-2, 142-pound Shaw was manacled to .another prisoner who told authorities he was unaware Shaw had escaped. Shaw was convicted on first-de-gree burglary charges last week. ,Ha faced a 10-to-20 year sentence. ' ■Rer admitting'W stole between $4,000 and $5,000 from 19 homes in January. Plan Crackdown On Speeding Drivers State Police Board Approves Program INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — State Police Supt. Harold Zeis and the department’s board today approved a new program to crack down on speeders and educate drivers. Zeis said it was “directed toward educating the motoring public as to what constitutes hazardous driving and to encourage driver improvement.” The major addition to the present program will be “written warning tickets” beginning March 15. State troopers will hand out these tickets for “non-fragrant” violations. The tickets will then be filed in the state police district headquart ters apd on the driver's perma- ' nent ' records in the Indiana Bureau c? Motor Vehicles. An accumulation of warnings and other reports of bad driving “may result” in the offending driver losing his permit. “The warning does not replace an arrest when a hazardous infraction is noted,” Zeis said, but “under certain conditions the written reminder has an important ed-’ ucational value/’
The new plan also includes courtesy service to stranded motorists; stepped up patrols, including radar and electronic timers in small towns and on county roads; closer coordination with local authorities; “wolf-pack” and air-ground patrols and a stepped up “public education" program.
