World Wheal Output Two Million Lower American, Canadian Production Higher ROME (UP) — World wheat production for 1956-57 will be some two million tons lower than last year, the Food and Agricultural Organization predicted today. Total production was expected to be 121 million metric tons, the latest issue of the FAO “Monthly Bulletin of Agricultural Economics and Statistics,” reported. The figures did not include production in eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and communist China. The report showed that high yields in the United States and Canada defeated efforts to reduce production in the two countries where wheat surplus stocks are among the world’s highest. — Present estimates are that the American crop will be 21.7 million tons, seven per cent above the previous year’s output. Canadian Yield Up With present American stocks at 28 million tons, supply for 1957

will reach an all-time record of 55.1 million tons, the bulletin stated. In Canada, high yields also resulted in increased production. It was estimated Canada would produce 1.2 million tons more than last year’s production of 13.4 million tons. Production in western Europe dropped from 37.8 million tons last year to 31.9 million tons despite increased.harvests in Scandinavia, Spain, Portugal, West Germany and Great Britain. Frosts in France almost halved production to 5.7 million tons against 10.4 million last year. Belgian and Italian production was also down. . Increased Expert Seen Because of lowered production in some countries total world wheat exports was expected to rise above last years 28 3 million tons. France, India and Brazil were expected to require to import wheat, the bulletin said. The bulletin predicted that the United States stocks might be reduced—by 500,000 tons—for the first time since 1952 as a result of increased exports and domestic consumption.
