Writer Picks j South Side As State Champs (Editor’s Note: Indiana sports editor Kurt Freudenthal has a 3-6 record at pickinc winners in the state prep basketball tourney over the last nine years. Here he tries his hand acais—and admits it isn't as easy as In 1955 and 1956 when Attacks was a standout favorite.) By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — They made it to the "Final Eight” last time before running out of gas and they’re determined to gain the state finals this spring. They're built around a towering center who may be the answer to Wilt the Stilt. What’s more—they’ve got the balance to get the job done. That’s Fort Wayne South—the United Press choice to pick up the hardware and all the trimmings when Indiana's 47th annual high school basketball crown is awarded here March 23. Sure, they'll have a rugged road, from the very outset,, too. They may run smack into touted South Bend Central in the semistate, but their coach is confident they can go. McCoy Hits 7 Feet South Side’s scrappers didn’t jell until recently. Center Mike McCoy —and he's the "Real McCoy”— didn’t become eligible scholastically until last month. He’s just a shade under 7 feet tall. Forward Danny Howe suffered a dislocated shoulder in October and also couldn’t go on all cylinders until recently. Since those two rejoined the sauad, the Archers put together a String of seven straight triumphs. "I thought we had a potentially good club,” said coach Don Reichert. "We had to go without size early, but since McCoy and Howe are back, the boys have been going good." Reichert said McCoy was an "exceptionally” good player for his size. He said he has a good jump-shot, can hook, and is a “fair out-shooter.”

Week's Schedule For Adams County . Basketball Teams Wednesday McKinley at Geneva. Friday Butler at Yellow Jackets. Commodores vs Harlan at Leo. Bluffton at Adams Central. Monmouth at Montpelier. Pleasant Mills at Gray. Berne at New Haven. Petroleum at Hartford. Only One Graduates "He’s improving all the time,” said Reichert. McCoy averages about 18 points a game and South does not "deliberately” play up to him. However, Reichert said his playmates are getting conscious of his tremendous height. Reichert, who played his basketball at Franklin College, starts 6-2 Tom Bolyard at the other forward and the Stavretis—Chris and Carl —at guard. "They’re all good shooters," said Reichert, “and have lots of balance. Howe also can hook, and Bolyard is terrific on the boards. Reichert isn't kidding himself. The Fort Wayne sectional is a “toss-up," he said, "but if we play good ball, we should come through." "You got to have the breaks. If we get them, we could give them trouble.” Apd if you think this is a powerhouse, wait until next year. They’ll all be back, with the exception of Chris Stavreti. Bolyard is only a sophomore. THE DECATUR. DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR, INDIANA

Indianapolis Semi-State Is Well Balanced (Second of four stories on probable team alignment by semistate districts in the Indiana high school basketball tourney.) By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS (UP)- You can have your choice and call it even. That's how well distributed the top contenders for an Indiana high school basketball tourney finals berth are in the Indianapolis district. “Hot" choices include Indianapolis Tech, Muncie Central, Aurora. Add unbeatens Lewisville and Versailles, along with New Castle and Richmond, and you may have the winner. Don’t bet on it. The road to Butler Fieldhouse March 23 is rocky. Tech’s North Central Conference champs, with a brilliant 182 record, have the toughest sectional assignment of the hopefuls. They’ll have to reckon with defending state champ Attacks, whose 15-5 mark cannot be overlooked and which split even with the east-siders during the season, along with at least two other city rivals—Howe and Broad Ripple—and‘suburban Warren Central. The way they'll line up in today’s pairings may go far to determine the winner. New Castle Improved Muncie . (15-4) should have no sectional trouble, but the Richmond and New Castle first-round champs could pose as threats. Richmond, although trounced at Muncie by 25 points early in the season, lost to Tech only in overtime recently. New Castle, probably one of the most improved teams in the state, has won six of its last seven starts, including a 62-59 decision over Muncie. The Trojans, however, may have trouble in their own backyard from' Lewisville, which hopes to close out an undefeated season. Versailles, also shooting for a perfect season Friday, was the team to beat in its own sectional and could even Emerge on top in Rushville’s regional to gain the Indianapolis semis. Aurora, which has lost only three games—all in Ohio—w a s favored in Dillsboro’s sectional From there', the road also leads to Rushville. The Columbus sectional-regional outlook that of a "grabbag ”—probably the most ufipre” dictable in the district. Every contender there—f ro m the to Southport and Scottsburg—had its ups and downs during the season. Southport, beaten only twice last year, starts at Center Grove where Edinburg and Franklin may be major obstacles. Shelbyville, which tied Southport for South Central Conference honors, eked out a twopoint win at Columbus, during the season—Smd Shelby also must win all its tourney games on the road. Madison Or Scottsburg? The' Scottsburg sectional winner is routed through Columbus. Madison has the balance and Scottsburg the home-floor advantage—another toss-up. Anderson probably will monopolize its own sectional. Staunch rivals Elwood and Alexandria will be principal dissenters, but the Indians figure to. advance to the Indianapolis regional. Boiled down, the Indianapolis district shapes up this way: The Capital City Sectional winner will be in a good spot at least to reach the semis. So will Muncie Central, although the Bearcats will run into stiffer regional competition from Richmond and New Castle sectional survivors. From there, it's strictly a tossUP * - . 17 Drivers Filed « * In 500-Mile Race INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — The official entry list for the 41st annual 500-mile race on May 30 climbed to 17 today with the announcement that Jimmy Bryan, Phoeniz, Ariz., and Cliff Griffith, Indianapolis, have filed for the race. Bryan is a two-time National Champion. He was the first 1957 entrant assigned to the same car as a year ago — the Dean Van Lines Special owned by A. E. Dean of Long Beach, Calif.
