University Conducts Auto Safety Research
By ROBERT J. SEALING United Preu Staff Correspondent NEW YORK (UP) — The familiar motorists’ gripe — “They don’t build cars like they used to" —has taken on a controversial new meaning for automobile safety experts. There are drivers who insist the modem products of Detroit’s assembly line are too flimsy to withstand the impact of a collision. Some charge that by increasing the glass area, automotive designers have dangerously reduced the thickness of comer posts, and have thus reduced the ability of the roof structure to hold firm in a rollover. Others deplore the popularity of "hardtop" styling on the grounds that it takes away roof support and weakens the entire body structure. Hardtops lack the side center posts of the conventional two and four-door sedans. The only organization that has done large-scale research on the relationship of body structure to automobile injuries is Cornell Medical College's auto crash injury research project. Included in the data of its more than 8,000 accident reports is the make, model and body

style' of every car involved in those accidents. Evidence collected by the Cornell project shows: 1. Complete structural failure, such as total flattening of the roof, occurred in less than 5 per cent of the accidents studied. In other words, for every five accidents involving almost complete demolition of the vehicle, there were about 95 other accidents in which the passenger compartment remained reasonably intact and whose partial crumpling played little or no role in producing injuries. The researchers concluded that what happens inside the car is more important than what happens to the outer shell in the vast majority of accidents. 2. Drivers and passengers were as likely to get injured or killed in cars of 1950-54 vintage as in the older vehicles dating from 1940-49. In some cases, the newer cars resulted in more frequent and severe injuries. But this was not due to such factors as “thinner comer posts and collapsing roofs,” but rather to other factors such as interior design and the tendency of unsupported hardtop doors to pop open, ejecting occupants.
3. Except for Injuries caused by ejection, there Is insufficient evidence to indicate that hardtops built before 1956 (when safety door locks were introduced) have greater injury-producing potential than conventional sedans. What about honepower and speed and their relation to the accident rate? The next article in this series will discuss the pros and cons of the so-called horsepower race. 11-Story Building Collapses Tuesday Four Are Missing In Rio De Janerio RIO DE JANEIRO (UP)—More than 100 firemen and policemen sifted through a grotesque hill of broken masonry and twisted girders today for victims caught in the collapse of an 11-story building. The conference was attended by 14 Democrats and 12 Republicans representing the leadership of both parties in the House and Senate, and the senior members of the Foreign Relations, Armed Services and Appropriations committees in both chambers, Knowland refused to say whether Mr. Eisenhower is optimistic or pessimistic about the Israeli problems. Hope for U.N. Solution Sen. Leverett Saltonstall (RMass.) said he hopes that Israel will withdraw from Egypt under terms suggested more than a week ago by Dulles. Mr. Eisenhower and Dulles have promised strong American support for Israel’s position that the Gulf of Aqaba and the Straits of Tiran are international waters from which Egypt cannot bar Israeli ships if it agrees to withdraw from Egyptian territory. This government also has promised to work in the U.N. to prevent raids by Egypt from Gaza against Israel. “There was a general hope expressed that a solution of this problem could be found that would comply with the resolutions of the United Nations, and at the same time would give assurances that the Gulf of 4<l aba would be opened to Israeli shipping.” Knowland told newsmen on thp White House steps.

Ghassan Jadid, one of Syria’s top anti-Communist leaders, may blow the lid off the explosive Syrian political situation, diplomats said here today. . . The shooting also was certain to add new tension to the relations between Syria and Lebanon, already cool because Lebanon has refused to return Syrian political refugees to the left-wing Syrian government. Jadid was machinegunned Tuesday in a Beirut street by Izzet Shaat, a hired assassin who was reported to have been trailing the Syrian political refugee for weeks. New Syrian-made machinegun bullets were found in the street. The assassin was killed in a rooftop gun battle. Jadid was a hero of the Syrian revolution against France and of the Palestine War. He was leader of Syria’s outlawed and anti-Com-munist Syrian Popular Party (PPS) which was driven underground in Syria but is still strong. Seltenright, county agent, reminds Adams county farmers. Late comers will have to take their chances of additional funds l being made available later. The sign-up tor corn will continue through March 8, according to Seltenright. Payments will be divided among landlords and tenants according to the contribution each makes to the production of the crop which would have been produced on the diverted acreage and the basis on which they would have shared in such crop or its proceeds. The amount of payments, Seltenright explained, will’ be figured on an individual farm per-acre rate, based on the average county dollar and cents rate of $53.36 pe; acre. Farm rates will vary, up or down from the Adams county rate, in accordance with the productivity of the land and the farming methods used. Farmers participating in the acreage reserve program for corn must reduce their acreage of the crop below the farm allotment and they must also comply with any other crop allotment established for their farms.
