Five Indiana Prep Quintets Are Undefeated INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — A season full of surprises, in which only a few top clubs have escaped the upset wave, ends this week with five clubs hoping to take perfect records into the four-week Indiana high school basketball tourney. At the same time, the dogfight for four major conference championships goes right down to the wire. South Bend Central, throughout the long campaign the No. 1 team in the state in the United Press coaches poll, made it 19-0 Saturday by swamping Fort Wayne North, 112-46, to grab the East NIHSC crown regardless of what happens in Friday’s headliner at fifth-rated Elkhart, last year’s loop champ. Little Versailles can take a 21game winning streak into the state tourney by knocking off Rising Sun Friday. Three other small town outfits hope to finish with 20-game skeins the same night— Lewisville opposes Spiceland, Otterbein will be at Southwestern, and Windfall at Bunker Hill. If all five make it, it would be the largest number of unbeatens in the “Hoosier Madness’’ in the postwar era. Four made it last and also in 1948, 1949, 1953 an<f 1955. Races in the Central, West

Michigan State Is Threat To Indiana Lead CHICAGO (UPi — Michigan State's menacing Spartans threatened to throw the Big Ten basketball jackpot into a three-way tie for first place tonight. The Spartans, looking for their seventh straight conference success, take on Illinois on the latter’s floor. At the same time, . Indiana risks its league - leading record of 7-2 against lowa on the Hoosier court. A three-team grab of first place would materialize with a Spartan victory and a Hoosier loss, both possible despite their opponents in this closest of all Big Ten basketball. campaigns. Ohio State, a half game out of the lead with a 7-3 mark, is idle on tonight's card, and thus would join Indiana and Michigan State at the top. Four Teams Lose Hope In other games not directly affecting the leadership, Michigan is at Purdue and Wisconsin at Minnesota. At this late stage of the campaign all but four conference entries were still in the running for the championship. Only Wisconsin (1-7), Northwestern (2-9), lowa (3-5) and Purdue (5-5) have abandoned all hope. Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota each had four defeats marring their record. But a rale season surge and a slump by the present leaoers could put them into the picture. ine Spartans made it six in a row Saturday night with a 77-67

Jay Hebert Winner Os Texas Tourney SAN ANTONIO. Tex. (UP) — Swarthy Jay Hebert, the elder of a pair of golfing brothers from the Louisiana Evangeline country, headed for this week’s Houston Open today $2,800 richer after calling the winning shots in the $20,000 Texas Open final round. The 34-year-old Hebert told brother Lionel prior to the start of Sunday’s final 18 holes that he was going out to shoot a four-un-der-par 67 and that "if anybody beats that, they deserve to win it.” Hebert did just that — and nobody beat his winning 72 - hole score at 271, although Ed Furgol, the man with the withered arm from St. Andrews, 111., came within inches of tying him when a 15foot birdie putt slid by the cup on the final hole. That gave Furgol a 272 and sl,900 for second place as he finished two strokes ahead of Tony Holguin of Midlothian, 111., and Arnold Palmer of Latrobe, Pa., whose 274 s earned them $1,300 each. After that came Julius Boros and Jimmy Demaret, who blew a | two-stroke lead he held going into the final round when he took 37 putts for a 74. Their 276 s were worth $1,050 each and put them one stroke in front of Cary Middlecoff, who earned S9OO for seventh place. College Basketball Indiana 87, Northwestern 74. Minnesota 74, Purdue 61.
