Phoney Minister In Custody In Kansas Ex-Convict Held In Small Kansas Town ELMDALE, Kan. (UP) — Authorities today considered pressing further charges against an exconvict who “won the hearts” of this small community as a phoney ! minister. Calvin Laskey, 44, a native of Canada, was arrested Sunday immediately after preaching his last sermon at the Christian Church. Authorities said he used the name of Rev. Dana Barton, one of his at least 18 aliases. Laskey spent much of his life in jails in various parts of this country and in Canada before turning to the ministry. His police record includes arrests on 26 felonies, including car theft, robbery and burglary. Told POW Story Laskey arrived here about a year ago after attending Park College at Parkville, Mo. He said he quit school when students learned he was an ex-convict and made life “tough on me.” “ After working several months with a highway construction crew, Laskey learned there was a vacancy at the Elmdale church so applied for the job and was accepted about four months ago. “He won his way into the hearts of a lot of people around here," said Roy Moore, an undersheriff who arrested Laskey. “He told the congregation and others that he once was a prisoner of war in Korea for 32 months and he had a story of brutality from here to yonder,” Moore said. “A Smooth Operator” i “He made a talk south of Cottonwood Falls about his experiences as a prisoner of war and when he was finished, there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd. He was a smooth operator.” Moore said authorities first FOR SALE Strictly Modern Ranch Type Home, s Full basement; built-in features; hardwood floors; garage.
