Jaberg reported today. Levi Schwartz brought the foxes in, and asked that the check be made out to "the Schwartz gang.” He said that when he went fox hunting, a gang usually followed him and helped, and it was mostly Schwartzes,, and he thought they would be tickled if the check could be made out to all of them. The county auditor explained that this would complicate the cashing of the check, as an especially long bank draft would have to be prepared if all the Sfhwartzes in the county were going to sign it. This satisfied Schwartz, who decided it would be easier tb split up the money anyway. ■ M -1 , . . - rt . -I. u.i . ■ --7 ■ - ■ -MMa Indiana Is Big Ten Leader In Surprise Win CHICAGO (UP)—lndiana puts its newly acquired Big Ten basketball lead on the line tonight against Minnesota and Purdue seeks a first place tie with a victory over a hot Michigan State five. The Hoosiers displaced Ohio State as top dogs Saturday night by scoring a 69-59 victory over the visiting Buckeyes. The loss nudged Ohio State to second place with a 6-3 record, but left it with a good chance to jump right back into a first place tie by just remaining idle on tonight’s card. A Minnesota win over Indiana and a Purdue victory over the Spartans would end the Hoosier reign and place the Boilermakers and Ohio State to a tie for the lead to a conference race where it is difficult to tell the upsets from the form games. In other games tonight,-Illinois entertains Northwestern and Michigan plays at Wisconsin. The Buckeyes, who raced to six straight wins and then dropped three to a row, fell behind at the outset and never gave the Hoosiers much trouble Saturday night. Archie Dees maintained his Big Ten scoring lead, with 17 points against the Buckeyes, and three teammates wound up with double figures. Frank Howard, No. 2 scorer, could get only nine points for the losers. The Illinois nigh scoring machine was stopped, 70-64, by Michigan State’s top-ranked defensive game, best to the Big Ten. It was the fourth straight conference success for the Spartans and forward George Ferguson with 20 points was the big gun. High for Illinois was Don Ohl with 15. The Boilermakers stumbled. 74-67, before defending champion lowa at lowa City when they failed to stay even with a hot scoring surge in the closing minutes by the Hawkeyes. Sophomore Clarence Wordlaw sparked the closing drive with 18 of his 19 pointe. Scoring honors, however, went to Augie Martel, lowa senior guard, who got 24. The Gophers’ scoring combination of George Kline, Gerald Lindsley and George Hason sparked a last-period scoring drive that carried to an 82-62 victory over Michigan at Ann Arbor. The Gophers were the only visiting team to win on Saturday night’s upset-marked card. _ K Couple Admits They Killed Hoosier Marine PROSSER. Wash, ffl — A young couple calmly confessed Sunday ' night that they killed a hitchhik- . tog Indiana Marine to Illinois last December. Robert Baker, 26, and his wife, j Trudy Jo, 17, admitted to Benton County sheriff's officers here the gun slaying bi Larry Michael Kirk, 21, Winslow, Ind., whose 1 body was found Dec. 26 in a clump of weeds along a road to Clay County, 111. Authorities said they investigated the Bakers when relatives of the girl became suspicious of remarks the couple made while visiting here. Mrs. Baker said she and Baker, an ex-convict, picked up Kirk while driving through Illinois enroute to Baker's home in Pennsylvania. Kirk was enroute to his Indiana home for a Christmas holiday leave. Mrs. Baker said in a signed statement that she and Baker planned to rob Kirk and, while he was asleep, decided the only way to get away with the crime ' was to kill him. Kirk was shot to the back with a rifle. J Mrs. Baker said she and Baker were married in Elko, Nev., after knowing each other only three days. LTI Leaguer /fsasgfti

Slate Netters I In Final Drive For Titles INDIANAPOLIS (UP)— Gary Froebel can nail down one championship this week and Indianaapolis Tech another—but don’t bet on it. The way the ball's been bouncing in Indiana high school basketball circles last week, anything could happen. Froebel, 9-0 in the West NIHSC, can take it all by beating defending champ Hammoned in one of Friday’s top games. Tech, the state’s No. 3 outfit but hard-pres-sed in two weekend starts, aims for its first North Central Conference crown since 1932 when it entertains Kokomo Friday. The Greenclads also are unbeaten in loop competition. Most other league titles won’t be handed but until next week—when the regular season winds up. Meanwhile, top-rated S out h Bend Central still led the 5 unbeatens, all with 18-game strings. Versailles can become the winningest Hooser quintet by beating Holton Tuesday and Vevay Friday. The others are Dover, Lewisville and Windfall. The South Benders should have a breather against East NIHSC rival Fort Wayne North Saturday. The Redskins have won only once in 17 games. — ~ Wabash can keep alive its Central Conference title hopes by licking Tipton Friday. League leader Hartford City has a nonloop date with Winchester. Southport and Shelbyville, tied for South Central loop honors, face Martinsville and Seymour Friday, respectively. Southport was upset by Indianapolis Washington Saturday. 67-56, while Shelby poured it on Vincennes, 8641.* Evansville Central and Princeton, >l-2 in the Southern circuit, have non-loop dates. Top Western Conference affairs include Terre Haute Garfield at Brazil and Greencastle against Linton, both Friday, and Terre Haute State at Greencastle Saturday. Also-in the East NIHSC Friday, South Bend Aaams is at Elkhart, and Michigan City at South Bend Washington. Elsewhere, Terre Haute Gerstmeyer is at Rockville Tuesday. Gary Roosevelt, which earned its 17th straight win at the expense of Gary Edison Saturday, is at East Chicago Washington Wednesday and tangles with city foe Wirt Friday.
