This is Heart Fund month and you are asked to place your dimes, nickels and pennies in the Heart cannisters which are placed in local stores. The proceeds from the annual Heart drive go toward research for the number one killer, Heart trouble. o o— — The legislative proposal to create local school study commissions to make a thorough study of our public schools needs, appears to be popular with the general public. The study would include all phases of the school problem. Merger possibilities and a complete going into ot all educational activities would be authorized under the proposal. It is time that this should be done, and we believe it would stop slipshod consolidations and give every taxpayer much more for his educational dollar. O O'- t Adams county farmers may wonder who really favors the Republican farm policy of Ezra Taft Benson. The answer was printed in the January 31 Congressional record. Recently Wisconsin farmers received a postcard from a group of 6 corporation executives, ----- three attorneys, and a dentist who called themselves the Constitution and Free Enterprise Foundation. They asked Badger farmers to send in 316,482 to finance sending a digest of Benson's book “Farmers at the Crossroads'* to every farmer in the state. This money, they emphasized, is tax deductible. It is interesting to note that the group, so much concerned about tax money that goes to the tamer, is not at all adverse to using the d*ld?Ai> belt distribute Benson’s boost for his farm program under the supposition that it is educational. Local farmers may wonder why their subsidy is to be deplored while the one employed for the distribution of "educational'* material ip desirable. . • ' ■

Every indication of the pres-, ent legislative session points toward higher state taxes. *lhe form these increases take is about all remaining to be decided. —_o o . "■ Decatur retail merchants have adopted an interesting series of activities for the coming year under the leadership of Robert Lane as chairman. With the cooperation of all merchants it appears that shoppers of this area would be in for some rare events and unbelievable bargain days. Shoppers throughout this area are invited to take part in these moneysaving days and you will soon learn that Decatur is your shopping center, where you’ll get the most for your money. o—o—. A little-mentioned item in most newspapers is the furor being raised nationally by the advertisements in national magazines under the name of America’s independent electric light and power companies. The cost of this advertisement is bom by rate-pay-ers of private-power companies which choose to disguise their own identities. Recently a Wisconsin rural-electric cooperative got good and mad, and wrote their congressman. The letter, included in the Congressional record, mentioned these facts: the' ads convey a false picture. The ads themselves are deducted from expenses for tax purposes. The private-power companies enjoy special tax write-offs. The cost, which is millions yearly, is paid by those of us who buy electricity from companies who sponsor the ads. Many rural areas would not have received electricity without public power co-oper-ative projects. Nearly two-thirds of the rural electrics are purchasing wholesale electric needs from private power companies. The group asked the congress to see that such propaganda was not charged to power buyers, and that such ads be held not tax deductible.
