Faces Prosecution : On Several Charges Planned Robbery Os I Bank But Lost Nerve MICHIGANTOWN, Ind. (UP)_ ! An unemployed and debt-ridden automobile salesman who said he . planned a bank robbery but lost . his nerve three times faced prose- ’ cution on several charges today. I Authorities said Paul Henry i Alward, 23, Danville, was arrested ~ by Clinton County sheriff Maynard Lewis and state police ; Wednesday at the Farmers Bank ■ here. He was charged specifically with carrying a pistol without permit and was taken to Clinton County Jail at Frankfort in lieu : of SI,OOO bond. Alward carried a pistol but did not offer resistance when he was arrested. Police said he readily admitted a plan to hold up the bank because he was unemployed and $2,750 in debt. Alward told authorities he first came here Jan. 23 “with intent to rob the bank.” However, he lost his nerve. He repeated the process twice more—last Tuesday and the following day. Each time he drove through town and walked up and down in i front of the bank. A suspicious bank cashier finally notified Lewis. Alward said he threw mud on his new car’s license plate Wednesday, apparently a precaution to help him in a get-away . should his holdup plan be successful. Inside the car police also found another set of plates. Secret Mission On Chicago Crime Clue Sheriff Is Probing Clues In Albama CHICAGO (UP)-Sheriff Joseph Lohman went on a secret missidn to Alabama today to investigate new clues in the murder of two young sisters. One of the clues. reportedly involved Bennie (The Dishwasher) Bedwell, a 20-year-old Skid Row I illiterate who explained at a news i conference Wednesday his confes- . sion and later denial of the slay- • togs of Barbara Grimes, 15, and ; her sister Patricia, 13. . The appearance of Bedwell at ’ the coming-out-of-j.ail “party” in a ’ sedate Lake Shore hotel gave Chi- ; cagoans a return taste of the roar- ’ ing 20s. Bedwell was freed on $20,000 i Monday on a charge of murder in • the slayings of the Grimes sisters, > whose nude bodies were found Jan. > 22 in a roadside ditch. The conference at times took on the aspects of a sideshow, and • Bedwell played the role of a suave ■ celebrity. His bondsman revealed ! Bedwell has received a number of ; nightclub offers, one of them for ; $2,000 a week. The offers marked a revival of a practice in the ’2os when figures in the sensational cases <?f those days got an occasional turn in vaudeville Jo capitalize on their fleeting “fame.” However, Bedwell’s attorney, David E. Bradshaw, said his client would not hit the nightclub circuit and called the offers “absurd.” Bedwell himself promised to begin a new life, and as a starter swore off drinking. While Bedwell took the limelight, Lohman flew to Athens, Ala., to follow up on two letters he received in connection with the crime. Sheriff’s officers indicated one of the letters involved Bedwell and the other may throw some light on an automobile believed to have been used to abduct the victims. : Trade in a good town — Decatur CONSOLIDATE MID-WINTER BILLS INTO A “Budget Plan” PERSONAL LOAN Make your first payment during MAY, if you wish. Ellender Unhurried On Corn Legislation Senate Committee Waits House Action WASHINGTON (UP)—Chairman Allen J. Ellender (D-La) of the Senate Agriculture Committee said today he is in no hurry to push through legislation to boost corn planting allotments. Ellender said he and Sen. George D. Aiken (R-Vt) agreed the Senate committee will not act until the House passes a corn bill, despite pleas for fast action from the administration and from corn belt legislators. Aiken is ranking Republican member of the committee. Ellender opposes changing the 1957 allotment House action Is considered unlikely before late next week. The House Agriculture Committee has been holding hearings on corn acreage for more than a week and is expected to write its bill early next week. Agriculture Secretary Ezra T. Benson and his aides have asked Congress for action “well before March 1.” Details of the administration’s corn proposal reached Capitol Hill Jan. 29. Benson wants Congress to pass a bill before March B—the deadline for 1957 corn soil bank contracts. The secretary told the Senate Agriculture Committee in testimony Wednesday that a corn acreage bill is necessary to save the soil bank in corn growing areas. Benson says few farmers would comply with the present relatively small planting allotment of 37.3 million acres in the 24-state “commercial” growing area. Farmers |

who do not comply cannot enter the surplus-reducing soil bank or qualify sos price supports. Benson’s proposal would fix a corti planting “base” allotment of 51 million acres through 1959, with a support price floor of 70 per cent of parity. There would be no mandatory supports or controls in future years. MAny House and Senate corn belt Republicans have indicated they favor increasing the allotment without changing the current corn support floor of 75 per cent of parity. House Democrats, meanwhile, have demanded that benefits for cotton, wheat and other crops be added to the corn bill. Ellender said today he favored making no changes at all in the corn program “for one more year, to see how it works out.” Corn growers had a chance to adopt a 51 million acre allotment in a referendum last Dec. 11, he pointed out. “They voted it out, and thaty their business,” he said. SENATE GROUP (Continued from Page Owe) bers. Douglas headed a Senate Labor subcommittee investigation of the ‘welfare funds in 1955. He said it turned up “shocking abuses such as embezzlement, collusion, kickbacks, exorbitant insurance charges . . . mismanagement, lack of know-how, waste, extravagance, indifference (and) nepotism.” FLAREUP (Caatlawed from Page O—> ent. The council also called for a speed-up in bringing about the merger of state and local unions affiliated with the old AFL or CIO which have not yet completed unification agreements.
