No Traffic Deaths In Lafayette In '56 Third Year Without Death Since 1944 LAFAYETTE, Ind. (UP)—This safety-conscious city of nearly 40,000 residents has just registered its’ third year without a traffic death since 1944, but police chief John V. Weinhardt said today “there’s always room for improvement.” T . While Indiana’s traffic death toll for 1956 soared beyond 1,200, Lafayette held the line just as it did in 1944 and 1953. Only two other cities in the nation with comparable populations matched that record last year. , “I think many people are responsible for it,” said Weinhardt. He credited news media for safety promotion, schools for alerting small fry and teen-agers, the city’s hospitals and doctors for saving countless lives of victims. Schools have their own guards agd patrols. Most high school > pqpils take driver training, al- > though it is not a compulsory ■ course. And medical care is sec--1 ond to none. “If it hadn’t been for the efficiency of our hospitals and doctors,” said Weinhardt, “we may have had some fatalities.” As for pedestrians, either Lafayette has been lucky or they are “agile enough to stay away from cars,” he said. “Our crossings are well marked, we use radar cars extensively, and we had a certain amount of luck.” In 1955, Lafayette went without a traffic death for 10 months. Then one fatality marred the record in November, and December brought another. > Neighboring West Lafayette, with a population of 13,130, fin-

ished 1956 with one casualty. •‘We were fortunate, but there’s always room tor improvement,” said Weinhardt. Many officers of his force of 59 have been through various special* ized training courses — short courses such as offered by Purdue University here or Northwestern, or the Police Academy. Weinhardt was reluctant to pass on his “formula” for traffic safety to other cities. There really isn’t a “formula” hece txrod aprnd wka a “formula” except hard work and getting 100 per cent co-operation from all citizens. But he indicated Lafayette isn’t resting on its laurels. He said he hopes to add “more equipment” so his department can do an even better job. By the time the train surfaced some 100 persons, including a number of the victim’s total of 151 dependents, had gathered around six burlap-covered tables that had been set up to receive the bodies. Afterward, a fleet of ambulances and hearses moved the victims to various funetal homes in the area. Their relatives and friends filed back to their homes in the little coal mining village.
