Members of the Indiana General Assembly will get down to business this week. Most of file horse play, except perhaps the last night capers, is over. Many important problems will be presented and members will be wishing for those early wasted days. Under our constitution, the General Assembly must adjourn after 61-days. ■ o oNews dispatches reveal that Mr. and Mrs. Bird Dog Wilson hitched a ride south, as far as Atlanta, Ga., with President Eisenhower, who was headed for a routine golfing week-end and then Ike very graciously loaned them his government plane to continue to their vacation spot In Florida. Golfing has become so much a part of the Ike schedule that certainly it shthdd be considered government business, and so in all probability the expense would be legitimate. A recent ruling of the Public Service Commission, which abolished this city’s right to have a combination residential rate on light and power has sent utility bills upward. In all probability if the action holds, it will be a boon for gas appliances. Electric bills which had been from 16.00 to SB.OO under the combination rate have zoomed to $ll.OO and $12.00 and even higher. The new rate charge is the same base if you have , an electric stove and water heater or note. We don’t think it is fair, because it penalizes the bigger users of electricity. What can be done remains to be seed. '■'O'— O' Thirty three million dollars is a lot of jmney-for the two. major political parties to.spend,on a political campaign, but that is the amount reported to and compiled by the campaign expenditure investigating committee. Let us hope that out of the investigation and revelations will come some laws with teeth in them to hold down this great national dishonor. It leads us to wonder, "Are we staging a campaign to elect officers or are we buying votes?” The sad thing is that everyone of the big donors will feel that he or she has a special favor coming from the government of the people and by the people.

Dunn and Bradstreet’s weekly business review reveals that purchase of furniture, major electrical appliances, and men’s clothing showed gains last week, while reWil buying in general was off slightly compared with a week prior. The increased activity in the buying of major eb ectrical appliances is the most encouraging note and it reveals that people are still buying those things which go toward modern living. Not a single one of the experts seems to feel that there is any permanent downward trend in buying. , Qualifications which a teacher must have to procure an Indiana teaching license will be one of the chief targets in the General Assembly this week. A bin has been introduced to remove requirements of taking teachers* training courses while in college and would make any college graduate with at least thirty hours in one major subject eligible to teach that subject has been introduced and is gaining considerable support The State teachers association is strongly opposed, but may have its closest scare. The measure if enacted into law would 1 practical!y do away with teachers colleges as such and would stress more the various subjects. There will be a lot of fireworks before this issue is settled. 0 0 Your attention is called to Decatur’s great Dollar Day this Wednesday. Vem Linker Named Circuit Chairman Lutheran Circuit In Meeting Sunday Vem Linker, of Zion Lutheran church at Friedhelm, was elected chairman of circuit A at a meeting held Sunday afternoon at Immanuel Lutheran church in Union township. Herman Steele of the host congregation was named vice-pres-ident, and Donald Hoile of St. John's, Bingen, was reelected sec-retary-treasurer. ■ The Rev. Henry Blanke, pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran church in Fort Wayne, was the guest speaker. He explained the “Crusade for Christ” area evangelism project in wtych all of the congregations in the greater Ft. Wayne area, including the Decatur circuit, are expected to participate. This project, scheduled tentatively for February, 1958, requires a large
amount of advance preparation. Results in other areas of the country have beAi remarkable both in souls gained and in Increased spiritual growth. A resolution was passed establishing a “Fair Share” committee of three members from each of the ten congregations to consist of the pastor and two lay members. This committee is to suggest the amount each congregation will be expected to contribute* toward district and synodical budgets. These quota figures are then subject to approval by the respective voters’ assemblies in each congregation. The newly elected program ddffimittee will consist of William Uffelman, of St. John’s, Bingen: Delmar Franke, St. John’s, Flatrock; Oscar Fuelling. Immanuel. Union township; and Herbert David, Emmanuel, Soest. The Rev. W. C. Vetter, host pastor, conducted the opening devotions. Adolph Dietrich, of Hoagland, vice-president of the circuit, presided.
